Assignment 1: What is transformation?/What are my personal goals for this class?

Transformation, is a time lapsing change of a dancer's personal habits, beliefs, practices, and attitudes. Some of my goals for this first term of Intermediate Dance are to increase my flexibility, because not only have I wanted to be flexible for a really long time, but because it would help me to reach my full potential in dance by being able to reach full extension and length within the arms and legs. I really need to increase my core strength, because when we are doing core exercises in class for either closing or opening, I give up so easily by putting my knees on the ground or curling up on my side because I am still working on how to push trough it mentally. The final goal I have for this trimester is to increase my focus or more of my attention span, I have noticed this a lot more recently that when we are practicing a move, that I don't quite understand, I will either give up or in a lazy manner attempt the move, and that's something I could improve not only for dance but because this applies to all of my classes.

Assignment 2: Write a reflection explaining HOW you are (or are not) progressing toward the goals you identified. Be tirelessly specific regarding the physical transformations, shifts in attitude and mindset, etc. I want to understand your perspective on your own learning so please provide me with every possible detail and angle on your progress over the last 5-6 weeks.

I feel like I have made some progress over the past 6 weeks. I have improved the duration and repetitions of different moves I have been able to do. I am noticing that I am still letting outside things, emotions, and situations stop me from focusing enough to focus in class enough to apply corrections. I have also been having a real lack of motivation to be in this class, and sometimes I question wether or not I really want to keep dancing and when I really think about it I start to get upset because I have been doing it for so long, that it would be heartbreaking to stop. I have also found a real love and passion for Salsa, something about it makes me feel very excited about it. The music that you use.

Assignment 3: Read the information in Soul Brasil Magazine about the Orixas and choose one that connects to and write about that

I feel as if I connect to the Orixas of Ianasa because she is strong and persuasive. I feel strong mostly in sports and dance, because those are the places where I feel most free and expressive. I feel comfortable in these places, because I find it hard to trust people. I feel persuasive in my social life because I can often get people to do things for me if I ask nicely, but I try to be strong about it and not use it as a tool of abuse, because it can take me over at time and I can abuse it.

Style of Dance: Samba Reggae, it comes from Brazil, mainly Rio De Janeiro

Origin: African roots, based from slavery of a way for people who were enslaved to express them selves.

Evolution: It evolved a lot in the 20th century, Mix of Brazilian Samba and Jamaican Reggae.

-Website 1 has stated that the word Samba is from Kimbundu (Angolan) term semba, which referred to an "invitation to dance". In the 1950's the powerful sounds of samba-canção would form in time to become the heartbeat of Rio's carnaval, and the primary vehicles for the style were (and are)\ organized groups or contingents called escolas de samba which are samba schools.By the 1970's Samba became big rather than just a type of music for the carnivals. Samba was big in creating a connection of all Brazilians and all social classes. By the 1980's, this style of dance had flourished in the city of Bahia,The group Olodum sings of the bloco Afro style, which adapted some of the different elements of Rio's samba. Olodum's lyrics speak of black culture and pride, used as an outlet by many people to express frustrations through the formation of a strong community organization
dedicated to providing education and opportunity. Blocos such as Olodum provided
much needed cultural and political refuge, political and cultural refuge. Bloco-Afro sound would fuse with Jamaican reggae and be known as Samba-Reggae, resulting in one of the most popular incarnations of samba into the 21st century.

Purpose and Function:It was used as a dance of hope when Africans were enslaved in Brazil, as a dance of celebration in some parts of Brazil especially in carnival and is danced in different parts of the world to celebrate achievements and success within communitites.

Citation/Sources

http://www.sambassadorsofgroove.org.uk/history-of-samba.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptqQnN1h5Oo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akJO_mZp6Ow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lj4ZUgJFQI

Spotify Playlist of (Firey_love) World Music

It also gave a mini description of the role that women play during the annual carnival. Also how the women had to make themselves seem important to be able to excel and become important. The main women just described there life and roles in the history of samba and how samba played a role in their lives.

What is your opinion of what you saw and/or heard? Please provide a thoughtful and specific response that reflects your particular interest and connection to the dance genre. This will, likely, be the longest portion of your response (between one half - a whole page of double space text)

I think that the video had a lot of information and helpful that information that definitely expanded my knowledge about the history of Samba. I really liked how the women went into very quick detail and got straight to the point on what role they played in the history of Samba. Also some of the info that was mentioned I had never found or heard before so I really liked that. It also showed people with diverse opinions on how Samba plays a role in their lives. One woman (flag holder of portola) mentioned how Samba is her life and how it's how she finds herself and her purpose in life. I made a connection with her because without the art of dance I wouldn't be able to express myself and all the emotions I can't put into words.
