When the moon is out, people are always happy, no one complains or grumbles, and the townspeople gather together. In the reoccurring image of the moon, we find an allusion of Ishmael's innocence, his desire to be secure. The moon also serves as an inner good that helps him bring back to a place of healing.

Rap music was also connected to the well being of Ishmael. When Ishmael became a soldier, the first thing they did was burn his rap cassettes. This represented an end to his innocence, as he would go on to slaughter hundreds of innocent people. Rap also helped his rehabilitation, as he started to get better when the nurse began to let him listen to rap.

The death of the imam shows that even the holiest people in society can die unjust deaths, and also shows the conflict between the rebels and the average citizens, who tried to maintain as normal a life as possible. It signifies the loss of hope and faith in the book, because the imam is a spiritual leader. People typically look up to religious leaders, but even the imam could not escape the rebels, and after this Ishmael becomes increasingly more paranoid and lonely. He has lost his friends and his brother in the same attack, and the death of the imam symbolizes the last lost of Ishmael's faith.

This shows that even though Ishmael and his comrades have not been brainwashed yet by the Rebels, they are still willing to go against their morals and steal the ears of corn. This scene symbolizes how desperate they are for food. Even though they have not yet been exposed to the Rebels inhumane acts, this is their first glimpse of showing that they may capable of harming people; that the Rebels could potentially have a huge influence on them.

Ishmael associated the moon with times of happiness and tranquility, basically when his family was still with him. With this affiliation of the moon to these times it gives him hope that the these times are not far out of reach, and although his family is deceased he can still recreate a loving and kind present despite the chaos surrounding him. And with he constant, yet not so prevalent presence of the moon he is reminded of the hope that he is still capable of doing so no matter how difficult the situation.

One of the first times the moon is used as a symbol of calmness, or lack thereof, would be after the massacre in Sumbuya by the rebels. Messengers who were spared warned the citizens of Mattru Jong that the rebels were incoming. That night, Ishmael looked up into the night sky expecting the moon to shine bright, but instead, was greeted by a blanket of blackness covering the sky. The moon was nowhere to be found. The symbolism that this presents is that the presence of the rebels creates tension and uncertainty in Mattru Jong and can be seen as potential foreshadowing for the killings to come.

The moon gives the reader a sense of what Ishmael is feeling at the time, when his emotions aren't specifically stated. The moon is also used as a foreshadowing tool. For example, on page 22 when they are in the village in Khilou's house, Ishmael says that the moon is not in the sky and shortly after that, the rebels attack the village. The moon is used to identify Ishmael's emotions and can indicate upcoming events.

Ishmael says that "I felt guilty... but in our position there wasn't much time for remorse." It brings him a sense of peace and hope when he sees it, giving him a calm center in this time of civil war and violence that surrounds him in every other aspect of his life. When it doesn't shine or when he doesn't see it, he doesn't have any sense of happiness or any sense of peace. A sense of uneasiness instead replaced that peace in the moon's absence, such as the one night it didn't shine when he was in the silent empty town of Mattru Jong. For Ishmael, the moon means peace, hope, and happiness, and without it, none of that is there

These two ears of corn relate to the work as a whole because it shows the struggles they faced and the effect the war had on them. It shows how the war had caused them to run and since they were on the run they had no source of food or water and this made them very weak. So, it shows how they would do anything, even steal corn from a 5-year-old just to survive. This is significant because this is really their change in morals because this is really their change in morals because this is the first time that they actually did something morally wrong just to survive and signifies the change from their past lives of living at home with their original morals and way of living to being on the run and doing almost anything to survive. That is how it relates to the work as a whole.

The fisherman helped the boys when they were at an extremely painful point in their journey. He provides food, water, and treatment for their burning feet after they were chased away from a village onto the burning sand. This fisherman symbolizes the small amount of benevolence left in their war torn lives. After being chased away and rejected by so many others, the boys find someone who is willing to help them during the time of paranoia associated with the rebels. He is the sole source of trust in their world of
fear.

Rap music saves the boys' lives multiple times in different ways. It helped them learn english and find themselves along with getting them out of some sticky situations. Along with "OPP" saving them from the tribe, rap music also was the reason they were not in their hometown when the RUF attacked.

The Fisherman

The fisherman's significance in the book is that he is a beacon. He symbolizes a beacon of hope for the seven boys during their long, difficult, and violent trek for safety. The fisherman shows the boys kindness and care, two traits they have not seen in a long time due to the war. The presence of these traits allowed the group to relax, eat, and even have fun in the midst of the hell breaking loose around them. This experience is etched into the minds of the boys as they leave the village, wishing they had at least learned the fisherman's name. The etching the fisherman leaves in their minds allows the boys to continue their journey with hope that they'll find a place where everyone is kind and caring, a place to call home.

I chose to moon because it reflects on not just Ishmael but his journey through this nightmare and how he recovers. As a whole I believe the moon represents hope, love, calmness, serenity, and perseverance. During the day, the atmosphere is filled with fear and chaos surrounds them. When nightfall hits and the presence of the moon emerges, even the animals feel at ease. They come out of hiding and take in the few hours of peace before the sunlight makes it way out; bringing the war with it.
