Since the 1960s, Colombia has been plagued by civil war. In 2012 the country’s president Juan Manuel Santos took the initiative for negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC. The FARC is Colombia's largest rebel group. They were founded in 1964 as the armed wing of the Communist Party and follow a Marxist-Leninist ideology. Their principal founders were small farmers and land workers who had banded together to fight against the staggering levels of inequality in Colombia at the time. While the FARC has some urban groups, they have always been an overwhelmingly rural guerrilla organisation. Juan Manuel Santos stopped this 50-year-old civil war, and that’s why he is a change agent. (BBC News, 2020)

During his first presidential election in 2010, Santos promised peace. He had previously served Colombia in three different cabinet positions, including Minister of Defence, earning him the trust of the Colombian people. He won that election with 69 percent of the votes the highest in history. Santos took office in August 2010, and after meeting in private for some time, he and FARC formally announced that they were meeting in September 2012.
