Le processus a été dévoilé, bien après coup, par les Tobacco papers, documents internes des industries du tabac dont la justice américaine a exigé la publication.
Dans d’autres domaines, il a été montré que la probabilité qu’une étude ait une conclusion en faveur des intérêts d’une industrie est nettement plus importante si l’étude a été soutenue par cette industrie que si elle a été réalisée à partir de fonds publics.
