  • School must teach basic knowledge.
    • Prepare students for adulthood and become an integral member of society. 
    • “Essentialists claim that schools have “catered too long to the desires of students”
  • Effort is more important than interest, even though interest should be used as a motivational force whenever it is evident. For many students, interest develops as they put forth the amount of effort necessary to understand a field of subject matter.
    • Essentialism would want students to have the discipline and attention to detail on subject matters, but not all students have the capacity to do so.
  • Teachers are not fellow learners or guide for the student. Should be seen as an authoritative figure that is part of the “adult community.” 
  • Primary focus on Primary and Secondary grades of school.
