1837 Steel Plow

John Deere made the Steel Plow which was very light and strong but slow and had to be pulled by and Ox or a Horse which was faster than an Ox but slower. A Horse could also carry the Steel Plow in the fields faster.

1800 Overpopulation

In the 1800s people started living in small cities in America and the cities were too small and too many people were living in the cities so since they kept putting trash in the ocean and since they put so much trash in the ocean the ocean was polluted and that created a disease called cholera.

1830s Lowell Girls

Francis Cabot Lowell had young women from nearby farms to work on the Lowell Mills until they returned to get married. Parents were unsure of sending their daughters away but once they heard that the girls had boardinghouses where they would all live together and since the company swore to protect the girls their parents agreed.

1834 Cast Iron Stove

In 1834 Philo Stewart created a cast iron stove small enough to use in kitchens and he ended up selling about 90,000 of them.

1800 Cities Growing

Since cities were growing so much more people were starting to open new places to work and with more places to work means more money and with more money that means financial freedom.

1812 Lowell Mills

During the war of 1812 a Boston merchant named Francis Cabot Lowell decided to merge factories the ones that spun thread and the ones that wove it into cloth. He decided to put them under one roof. After he died his partners decided to build an entire factory city and name it after Francis.

1844 Telegraph

In 1844 Samuel Morse made the telegraph. It was a device that sent electrical signals along a wire. Morse wrote a message in Washington and a guy in Baltimore received the message and sent it back to Morse.

1800s Child Labor

In the 1800s boys and girls as young as seven years old were working in the factories. It was a good thing because of the fact that they were tiny so they could fit in tiny spaces. On the other hand it was dangerous because their clothes could get caught on something and they could get hurt. Often the child's wages were used to help their families on the farms.

1846 Sewing machines

In 1846 Elias Howe made the sewing machine and a couple years later Isaac Singer improved it and clothing makers bought hundreds of the sewing machines. Clothes workers were able to make dozens of shirts in the time it took to sew one by hand.

1847 Reaper

In 1847 Cyrus McCormick made the reapers. The reaper was a Horse drawn machine that cut and gathered wheat and other grains. The reaper could do the work of five people.
