"Reaganomics" relied on supply-side economics. The theory was used to draft the Economic Recovery Tax of 1981 which lowered income taxes and business taxes by about 25%. The largest tax cuts went to those with highest incomes and Reagan's administration defended this saying that the extra income acquired would "trickle-down" to the middle and lower class in the form of wages but it only made the rich even richer and poverty deepen for many others.

The most severe recession since the Great Depression happened during his presidency from July 1981 to November 1982. An economic upturn occurred with consumer spending sprees, tax cuts, a decline in interest rates, and lower inflation. The stock market surged, unemployment declined, and the gross national product went up by almost 10%. This lasted until the stock market crashed in 1987 but eventually recovered and continued to increase.
