"We struggle to describe exactly what makes the delicious bends in blues melodies so heart-wrenching (which is largely an issue of pitch), and we can’t easily describe the difference in tone between a clarinet and a mandolin (which is an issue of timbre). Pop music, jazz, and much of non-Western music may be fairly simple melodically, harmonically, and formally, but it may be quite complex rhythmically and timbrally."

-Sara Haefeli

Introduction

The Western canon is the body of books, music, and art that scholars generally accept as the most important and influential in shaping Western culture. Musical "winners" always have three great expectations: Notation, Musical Language, and the concept of The Work. Musicians in this tradition are trained to study music that is notated. With musical language, you would try to have a good melody and harmony. Lastly, the concept of The Work is to try to create music as original as possible. The musical attributes of these “winning” genres set the standard for how we study music and the qualities we expect to hear. I believe that the Western Art Music canon is the list of works considered to be the greatest, most foundational, most representative of "classical music." I think some musical canon composers would be Hector Berlioz, Johannes Brahms, Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovsky, and Anton Bruckner. I will include some of those works in this padlet.

When I think of Western Canon, I think of several well known composers such as these. Some include: Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. I am currently listening to WR 101.1 FM online radio and they are playing Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus: Piano Trio in G (K 564) – 1. Allegro. He is probably the composer that I hear of more when talking about Classical Music.

Credit: Wikipedia

This was one of the pieces being played on the WRR 101.1 FM radio. I think Bach is another very well known composer and I would consider his pieces as a "canon." I noticed this radio plays a lot of "canon" pieces and well known composers such as Bach, Mozart, Handel, and Liszt. This radio plays very similar pieces back to back. They sound very original.

After discussing Classical music and listening to the classical radio for a while, I believe that a piano is one of the most important instruments in this genre. They bring all kinds of octaves from high to low. I believe they bring a great melody and harmony to these pieces. I've seen a couple of videos of people playing the piano and I love the passion that they have for it. They bring their emotions out by playing the piano.

Credit: lynda.com

Although I could not find anything on campus to take a picture or video of, I did find this performance of UNT's Baroque orchestra performing Vivaldi's Gloria. I did like this piece, it was very upbeat and it felt whimsical. Throughout the performance I feel like it goes from happy to sad and there are all kinds of emotions. It puts listeners into a story.
