Attachment theory is a powerful framework for understanding affect regulation. In this article, we examine the role

played by attachment orientation in shaping emotional reactions to interpersonal transactions within close relation-

ships. Using our recent integrative model of attachment-system activation and dynamics as a guide (M. Mikulincer

& P. R. Shaver, 2003), we review relevant evidence, present new findings, and propose hypotheses concerning how

people with different attachment styles are likely to react emotionally to relational events. Specifically, we focus on

attachment-related variations in the emotional states elicited by a relationship partner’s positive and negative behav-

iors and by signals of a partner’s (relationship relevant or relationship irrelevant) distress or pleasure. In so doing,

we organize existing knowledge and point the way to future research on attachment-related emotions in close

relationships

Chapter Summary of Weekly Reading

This week’s chapter focused on Attachment theory which in my opinion I would define as a bond between someone close to you such as a relationship between a parent and child. Attachment theory is a topic that has multiple definitions and explanations based on a person and their experience. Attachment theory originated from John Bowlby Mary Ainsworth. It is simply the idea that depending on what type of household you were raised in under your parents can have a direct effect on you as a person, how you treat others, and how you could potentially parent your own children. This could be due to the different types of attachment styles which are seen in different scenarios. The four styles of attachment theory are secure, avoidant, anxious, and disorganized, also stated in the book. Each have a different meaning and reflects how the relationship between the parent and child would look. For example, secure typically means that you can easily control emotion, communicate well, and have an overall healthy relationship. Avoidant would be like dismissing your emotions or avoiding emotions. An example of anxious would be a fear of rejection or abandonment, and disorganized would be a fear of parents from a certain childhood trauma. The book provides a great example in a story about three girls who all have similar but different attachment style theories. Each girl is living in a different situation, and they have different point of views. Overall, the attachment theory is an interesting one and it can be very personal. When thinking back on the chapter and this week’s assignments, I have gained insight on my own attachment style theory and now I can be more aware of the signs.

1. Thinking back on your life I'm sure you can relate to at least one of the attachment style theories when it comes to a relationship with your parents. What would you consider your attachment style theory to be? Can you see how it may affect other relationships in your life?

2. Since the attachment theory is like a relationship between parent and child, based on your attachment style, what would you do differently if you ever had kids to ensure they could have a secure attachment style?
