Palenque was a major power on the border between the Mayan highlands and the Mayan lowlands. The city consisted of many great buildings and temples. Of course though a great city must have a great ruler and that is what Pacal was. Pacal became the ruler of the city when he was just 12 years old but during his time as ruler he led many important community events such as religious dances and public meetings.

At the time, Tikal was the largest city during the Classic Age. The city of Tikal had an estimated 50,000 inhabitants and about 90,000 inhabitants around its peak. Although Tikal was already massive, Tikal was constantly fighting with the city of Copan for land as well as power. Many of these cities or lands that they fought over never really had one city permanently ruling them. One reason why Tikal rose to the top of the Mayan empire was because they were right along a main trade route, this allowed them to trade for goods they needed and valued.

Today Chichen Itza is famous of it being one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and its grand temples. Chichen Itza was a powerful economic city around 600 AD and a city of well planned and constructed pyramids and temples in clusters. The Temple of Kukulcan, a massive step pyramid, towers over the ancient city as seen below. Besides this, other monuments such as the ball court and the wall of skulls depict the everyday life of the Maya as well as their religious beliefs.

Copan was an ancient Maya city, located in modern-day western Honduras and it lasted from A.D. 426 and 820. The city’s core covered about 37 acres and archaeological work shows that it was remodeled and rebuilt over a period of 400 years. Research shows that Copan was a regional power in the southern Maya region. Copan was a fairly large dynasty during the Classic Age, consisting of at least 16 kings or rulers before its fall. According to trade maps, Copan had access to large amounts of jade that could catch a high price when trading with other peoples or cities.
