Berk Sürmen / Arın Aydoğan: “In the article Sustainability and Intergenerational Social Equity” by Stazyk et al. (2014) the writers discuss the term sustainability throughout history and today to understand intergenerational equity. They illustrate situations from the history itself such as the Athenian city and how the society worked together to achieve sustainability. The writers take on the term on three major topics such as economic, social and environmental. With social equity they explain what societies should do to create and live in a greater community for all generations. On the other hand, they claim that the society should work together to accomplish a greater economy. Also the writers suggest people to protect the environment for future generations. To conclude Stazyk et al make it clear that with people focusing on these three topics we can achieve sustainability.

In the article “Sustainability and intergenerational social equity”, by <del>the authors</del> Stazyk et al (2014)<del>. t</del>he authors discuss firstly about definition of sustainability today <del>in present</del> and the e<del>a</del>ffect of current generation's actions on the future. They also explain the sustainability from three points, environmental aspect, social and economic aspects. However sustainability is not a new concept, it was there from the time of ancient Greeks. In addition to that the writers explain intergenerational fairness and how the current generation must care what they are going to leave for the next generations to come. For the environmental sustainability aspect the writers emphasize on the important of preserving our ecosystem and natural resources for future generation. Also, The appearing of scarce resources and the limitless demands in some countries (rewrite this part as language hinders understanding) and how they deal with it, the writers outline the two models of economic sustainability, the first model argues that it is exclusive for governments to maintain the natural resources, in contrast, the second model is about giving the responsibility specifically to individuals. Finally, the social aspect here the authors are sound hopeless because for the future generations to have a healthy community they need the same resources that we have today which seems un<del>in</del>feasible. In conclusion the writers are hopeful (in the previous sentence you have a contradictory claim. Go over this!

In the article of “Sustainability and Intergenerational Social Equity”, Stayzk. et al (2014) mention<del>s</del> the importance of sustainability and intergenerational equity. The author states that the term of sustainability is not a new term. We can see it<del>’</del>s examples 2500 years ago in Athenian citizen oath. In today’s world sustainability means much. People should use the resources of the world for their needs but also they should consider about the future generations. They should leave <del>left </del>the resources to the future generations at least as it was left to them. The authors survey<del>s</del> that topic in three categories. They are environmental equity, economic<del>al</del> equity and social equity. Environmental resources are common values and everybody deserves that. In economic equity the author mentions two economic sustainability models. <del>In Heals</del> The first model claims that <del>idea</del> environmental assets should be protected by government. On the other hand the second model <del>Bratland</del> advocates that owners should do that.

As a conclusion people should protect the resources for the future generations because it is people’s obligation. If people work for their obligation, they can achieve the sustainable world.

Thank you for the task Mert.
Ceren Otu: Stazyk, , Moldovanova, and Frederickson, (2014) , in their article “Sustainability and Intergenerational Social Equity ''says what is sustainability. The author thinks that sustainability reflects an increasing awareness that existing human needs and expectations need to be balanced against the immediate and long-term capacity to support ecosystems. Sustainability is not a new concept. 2500 years ago, the citizens of Athens promised to leave the city better for future generations. The definition of sustainable development sworn by the Brundtland Commission and the Athenians is similar due to the fact that both are concerned for future generations. The author claims that current generations have responsibilities toward future generations abound. Unfortunately, people’s obligations to future generations are difficult to be balanced against current needs and expectations. Ecology is an important concept in sustainability because environmental and natural resources should be shared with future generations in sustainability. The economy is processed in terms of sustainability. The idea of intergenerational sustainability in the economy is based on the idea that “the current generation does not fulfill social and public responsibility to protect“ environmental assets amacıyla in order to generate income for future generations (Brätland, 2006, p. 13). There are two models of economic sustainability. According to Heal (1998), the government should be concerned with sustainability, while Brätland advocates private property. According to the author; social sustainability is generally defined as a system that not only meets the needs of existing members, but also supports the ability of future generations to maintain a healthy society. A well-known theory, the tragedy of the commons, focuses on this issue. This tragedy shows that sustainable social interaction and cooperation does not seem realistic under conditions of scarcity. There is a significant improvement in the prospects of future generations about sustainability because, regardless of the current weaknesses, there is a case where their interests are explicitly accepted as an obligation. People should adopt and implement policies that support intergenerational justice.

In the article, “Sustainability and Intergenerational Social Equity”, by Stazyk et al (2014), the authors claim that sustainability can be described as the need of intergenerational social equity. Accordingly, they assert that even though the mission to achieve this seems highly unlikely to be successful, there is still hope for it to be possible if the need to move towards it is explicitly considered as an obligation. The writers develop this argument by explaining the meanings of environmental, social and economic sustainability. They believe that to achieve environmental sustainability it is necessary to use the natural resources of the world in a way that they benefit the current populations but also don’t run them out for future generations. Similarly, economic sustainability can be achieved by applying the same principle to the economy’s assets (make sure two models stated by the writer) and social sustainability can be accomplished by understanding the concept of ‘tragedy of the commons’, and then working towards avoiding this phenomenon (briefly state what should be avoided? what is the tragedy?). In conclusion, the writers are confident about the potential positive outcomes if importance is given to attaining sustainability and intergenerational fairness after thoroughly understanding the problem at hand.

Thank you for the task. It is a well-organized summary, but please go over my comments.

Best,
MET
