The diary might be so you can right your adventures. The jammy dodgers and the flask might be refreshments when they are walking up the mountain but it might be a tall mountain, consequently being a long journey because they have already eaten all of the biscuits and burnt through most of the candle.

Also in the artic you would need the Jamie dodgers for body fat because you need to eat 2000g a day to stay warm with all the winter gear and the warmth of the candle (which has probably been burning for a while,) on top of all that. You also may need a journal to write in and a picture of his family to keep him happy.
