Timekeeping aided navigation, and made it possible to catch a train or a plane or even meet a cab. Without a clock of some sort, it would be purely by chance if we ever made it to an appointment at the time we were both expecting the other to be there.

If you tell yourself you’re going to do something soon, it’s much easier to say “in the next five minutes” than soon, if you want to get it done at least. Keeping time has been getting us where we need to go, and letting us do what we need to do for thousands of years. In essence, it’s how we keep it together.

Keeping time caused deadlines to exist. It made us want to measure our functions as well, we eat every 3-4 hours, not when we’re hungry, we sleep from about 10-6, and not when we’re tired, so on and so forth. Like I mentioned before it created deadlines, we need to have things done before a certain time. Even though keeping time keeps us all from going insane, there are days when it’ll drive you insane because you have a splitting headache and an assignment due at 11:59 tonight. (Wouldn’t know anything about that, and it also totally wasn’t your fault for procrastinating) Keeping time has kept us away from the neutrality and peace of being aligned with our bodies signals, as hippie as it sounds, keeping time has made it harder to listen to ourselves.

The effects of keeping time in history were making life more formalized and planned, it made life more structured. The effect of time keeping on history was this newfound structure, as well as boosting civilization as a whole, once people started to track time, it was easier to get things done, it was easier to know when to start thing and when to be finished with them, and in a way it even gave purpose. Without time, it would always seem like there was time to do things, but when keeping track of it, you realize that there’s a finite amount and you need to use it properly. (No, I don’t know how I turned keeping time into one of those motivational speech videos on YouTube from 2012 that generation x really likes)

When humans begin keeping documents of time, it gave accurate account that people in the future could look into. We can look back and see the affects at great lengths now, and can find things out that didn't happen in the moment. Like linking smoking to lung cancer, someone somewhere had to look at trends to see the connection. Now timing is just about what makes the world go round. If your late to your interview you have a lower chance of getting that job, and now your money is not enough to keep the lights on.

Now the negatives of keeping records of historical events is an amazing thing but some places did it better than others. Sometimes without proper documentation historians tend to see more estimations than answers then they find documents where they recorded the lineage of every man and his horse. Another downside is the way time moves now, with fast paced lifestyles the neglect of important everyday needs seem to have been normalized and good sleep is rare now. We have also fit ourselves into routines such as having set times in the day to do things and not do them in those hours. like only eating at 8:00, 12:00, and 5:00. not napping though the day, sleeping at 11:00 and getting up at 5:30 day. These are secludes that my own body goes through instead of feeling the way it needs to.
