Estates General(1789)

In order to govern France more effectively, King Louis summoned the estates general, made up of all 3 estates, who would decide on what France would do during the crisis. However, the 1st two estates were able to decide all of the laws because they held the majority of the votes compared to the 3rd estate, which hurt France even more.

American Revolutionary war(1776-1781)

The American revolutionary war inspired the French people by showing them that they could rise up against their rulers and form a government for the people. It also hurt France economically, because the French government spent a lot of money aiding the US government with no return of the money they spent.

7 years war (Began 1754)

Storming of the Bastille

On July 14th, 1789 a mob of people approached the place and demanded to have the arms and ammunition stored in the Bastille. When the people guarding the Bastille refused the mob stormed it the prison and released all 7 of the prisoners that were kept inside. This event showed that people could could challenge and monarchy and overpower it.

Tennis Court Oath(1789)

The 3rd estate became unsatisfied with the estate generals. After finding out they had been locked out of the estates general, they decided they would form their assembly and write their constitution, which they swore to do and not separate until the constitution was completed, inside of a Tennis court.

The King and Queen attempt to flee France

Execution of King Louis

After the national convention sentenced him to death by 1 vote, former King Louis was executed on January 21st, 1973, where he was killed via the guillotine.

People are starving (1788)

France faced economic problems. A rapidly growing population had outgrown the food supply. There was also a severe winter that resulted in famine and widespread starvation in the countryside.

Reign of Terror

Robespierre was one of the chief architects of the Reign of Terror, which lasted from September 1793 to July 1794.

Massacre of Champ De Mars

The people protesting in the Champ De Mars wanted to abolish the monarchy. Because of the amount of people and all the chaos General Lafayette open fired on the crowd of people killing at least 50 people.

August 10, 1792

Execution of Robespierre

As people began to become less revolutionary, they looked for someone to blame for the terror in France. That person was Robespierre, who was the center of the Reign of Terror and convicted for his crimes. On July 28, 1794, he was executed by the guillotine.

Directory(1794-1799)

The Directory was a committee with 5 members which was the governing committee until November 1799 when it was overthrown by Napoleon and replaced by the the Consulate.

National Assembly (1789)

Three Consuls(1799)

Seeing that France was very unstable, General Napoleon and 2 other powerful men couped the government in France and took over power there. Though all 3 of them were equal in power at the beginning, Napoleon quickly became the most powerful and took over all power.

Legislative Assembly (1791-1792)

The legislative assembly was the group of people that had the power to create laws and approve and reject declarations of war. The Legislative Assembly didn't last long and died out because it struggled to pass reforms, faced the threat of war from other European nations, and had to deal with lingering economic issues. Because of all this the Legislative Assembly ended in 1792 and was replaced by the National Convention.

National Convention (1792 - 95)

The National Convention was the third assembly of the French Revolution. It came after the Legislative Assembly and founded the First Republic. The first act of the National Convention was to get rid of the monarchy.

Napoleon(1799-1815)

After coming to power, Napoleon invades most of Europe to defend France and conquer more land for France. He was very successful until he was stopped in Russia after they burned their crops. The European powers defeated him once, but he returned and they defeated him again in 1815. He was exiled to St. Helena, an island far away, where he lives under guard by forces. He died there in 1821.
