1.4 In accordance with respect for human rights, ‘living’ tolerance does not mean tolerating social injustice, abandoning or weakening one's beliefs. This means that everyone is free to adhere to their own beliefs by accepting that others adhere to their own. This means accepting the fact that human beings, naturally different in their appearance, position, speech, behavior, and values, have the right to live in peace and be what they are. It also means that one's views must not be imposed on others. "*
(from the Declaration on the Principles of Tolerance, signed and adopted by UNESCO members on 16 November 1995)

Tolerance means respecting others, their opinions and beliefs, which differ from their own beliefs. Tolerance can be encouraged through education, because ignorance of cultural and religious diversity can lead to insecurity. Today, the media provide us with information that is inaccurate in most cases, so people often agree with the opinion of the media, without even thinking about the limitations of the media. The masses create the majority of intolerance. As an example, I would give stereotyping of communities or preconceived notions about them. Intolerance can be seen in the example that encompassed today, and that is police brutality over George Floyd. George Floyd tried to counterfeit the $ 20 bill, but was caught in the act. The policeman put his knee to his neck, so he kept his knee for almost ten minutes, George showed no signs of life, but resisted. At that point, George Floyd's videos began to spread on social media like lightning. Celebrities show their tolerance by publishing quotes "Justice for George". One quote gives rise to the entire Black Lives Matter movement, which looks back at police brutality against the black population in America. From this arises the question: Did the people who filmed have tolerance for George? I think they are the same culprits as a police officer, they watched the crime unfold before their eyes, but they decided to be intolerant and film, they were not punished for their subtlety. I conclude that tolerance can be learned, but whether it can be applied to situations in life is difficult. Tolerance and intolerance contradict each other, we can decide whose "side" we will be on, but people's unconsciousness always chooses intolerance, so there are more and more hate crimes, police brutality,… in the world.

The term tolerance comes from the Greek word tolerare which means to endure. It implies tolerance and respect for other people's ideas of attitudes and ways of life. To be tolerant means to be free, to hold fast to your beliefs, and to accept that others hold on to their own. This means accepting the fact that human beings, naturally different, have the right to live in peace. Tolerance in Croatia, but also in other eastern countries, is not sufficiently represented. Accepting an opinion different from theirs is an abstract concept for some, conservatism is still the main culprit for that. Differing opinions are still not accepted, condemned and eliminate. All this is a big culprit for the underdevelopment of society and for the social problems that we notice every day. The only way to correct the problem is to develop tolerance, society simply has to accept differences and other people's opinions and broaden their horizons until this changes, the development in socio-social terms will be minimal.
