Celebrating black culture and history is important for our students. This website provides lessons on the contributions of many African Americans that can be used any time of year.

Activity: Build a Logo to Express Who You Are
Using the link to Celebrate Black History, Culture and Identity, locate the lesson on Build a Logo to Express who you are. The lesson begins with a short video that describes to students that they are unique and that logos can be used to represent people, products, and companies. Students then will begin to think about words that represent them and how those words can themselves be represented. Once students create their own logos, they will share these logos and how they represent themselves. Classmates can then get a chance to see their peers in a new way. They will get to learn more about their classmates, have civic engagement, and have a supportive learning experience in the classroom.

This website has an enormous amount of articles and lessons that teachers can use to teach students. Topics range from diversity to civics to historical topics.

Lesson: What is a Family?
In this lesson plan, students discuss what makes a family a family. They will have opportunities to discuss and share what makes their family special with a partner. All families are unique and we can learn from each of our families differences. Students will learn that the differences in our families or cultures can make our school and community stronger. They will then create artwork representing their family and what makes is special. After the artwork is hung in the classroom, students will think again about what makes a family and reflect on how their idea of a family may have changed during or after the lesson. Learning about others and attempting to gain a better understanding of each other will make for a stronger classroom and community. This activity teaches cultural awareness and diversity. It also allows students to participate in the classroom discussion and apply good citizenship by listening and respecting classmates cultures and family representations.
