It helps with discussions with parents when you are able to discuss the generational differences. Most people will make decisions or judgement based on their own personal experiences rather than placing themselves in the situation/time of the student. This can lead to poor decisions related to consequences and guides to help students.

It is difficult but the best tool is truly communication with the students/teens in your family. I have learned the most having Bradley and Matthew around discussing current topics, school, and social media.

Remembering that they have a short attention span and that they feel super connected through their technology will help me plan more diverse lessons to meet their needs. It will also help me be patient with them as they, indeed, do seem to mature a little more slowly.

I think we all have a tendency to get stuck in a rut with lessons (using the same ones year after year) and mine could use some tweaking to make them more relevant to the kids that I'm teaching. I was surprised to see that they like to collaborate and show off what they know, so I plan to do more of this.

It is important to understand how today's kids learn and interact with one another. We have to take into account how our students are being raised, as well as what they have access to. Just because the majority of this generation has access to specific technology or life experience, does not mean they all do/have. We have to be careful with grouping all of our students into how we plan/engage. However, knowing this information gives educators more of an idea on how to attack teaching/engaging.

The primary piece of information I need to be more cognizant of and use to my advantage is that if my current students aren't engaged, they will engage themselves with something else. High school students now will not be passive learners. Sit and get has got to go. I have always thought that ninth graders need some continuity, structure, and repetition in my style of teaching, but often engagement in a lesson comes from the novelty of it. Where is the balance for students new to high school between structure and novelty?

I would rather do things myself than rely on anyone else. I truly trust someone if I ask for help from them. The career lattice analogy also really struck home. Both my husband and I are very late Gen Xers and both of us have been dedicated to the type of work we find fulfilling, but never a company or place. We have changed locations we worked at for money or a better working environment.

Sometimes I look back and can't believe the things that I was doing at an age that I would never consider letting my daughter do at that same age. I also feel as if I am resilient and frequently don't understand why people can't just "get past" obstacles in their life. I quit a career that may have lead to higher pay to become a teacher because I felt like I needed to do something "worthwhile" with my career.

Like the others above it is helpful to be reminded that the current generation of students need to be engaged quickly or they will tune out. The days of "sit and get" are gone. I also found the fill in the blank questionnaire to be enlightening. I discovered that students today are way more concerned with their future than I was at their age. I don't think I am reading into the answers I got but it seems to me there is a lot more anxiety about making the "perfect" choice for their college and career. At their age I was more concerned with sports, music and having fun. I don't remember thinking I had to make the right decision coming out of high school or my life would be off track.

This information could be good to use when you are trying to build relationships with your students. Since every generation is different they have different strengths and weaknesses as well as topics of concern. If we are more aware of these aspects, it could benefit us when we develop lessons or other strategies to understand how the generations think. Based on my student sheet compared to mine, there wasn't a whole lot of differences in the views we shared, because I am not that far removed from the current generation (I have a sibling who was born in Gen-Z). It does seem that my student response is more serious about grades than I was because things like college have become more increasingly competitive, but I think this would be beneficial to help us as educators understand why students are the way they are.

There just always seems like there is something that needs to get done and if it's not getting done by me, it will not get done, or get done by someone else which is just as bad (even though it's not)! I am also heavily influenced by my peers. I definitely always feel rushed, have parents who worked outside of the home and have always been into organizations that promote human rights etc. A few things from gen x that stood out to me were being very indepnedent and the career lattice. Growing up wanting to be a teacher, I always kind of viewed my future job that way. I also grew up in a pretty 'techie' household and have had computers, cell phones, etc. involved since I was a very young child... so I do feel that pang of anxiety when I'm disconnected which is a more gen Z characteristic.

I think this lack of compassion could change with maturity. I just hope to teach them to care about what matters.

Knowing how each generation accepts and receives information, allows us as educators to restructure our communication to support that generations specific needs. I think that in order to reach our students, we need to know what issues they care about and what makes them who they are. Just like when I was in school and my teacher constantly used the word "dubie" ( sp?) to describe a dumb person but to us it meant "joint". His cultural relevance needed updating and it effected how we learned in his class.

I especially liked seeing what organizations each group donates to, and where they volunteer their time. By comparing my Reflection page with my students, I saw that even though we are in two different generations, some of our interests and concerns are similar. It helped to know what our students' concerns are (ex: safety) because it helps us be able to understand some of their behavior. The section on technology with the iGen generation is no surprise, but it's important to remind ourselves that these students have grown up in a world where technology and internet has always existed.

I am having to work much harder to find ways to change up my lessons so they don't get bored.

The second piece that struck me has to do with the suicide rate. I think I am much more aware of it due to the news, and I definitely talk to my 14-year-old daughters about the why's. I try to keep an eye on my students as well, looking for changes in behavior. My hope is to catch a student before he/she ever feels the need to carry through with suicide.

As a Millennial, I have donated to causes and volunteered, but my preferences don't really align with the standard Millennial causes. With respect to characteristics and behaviors, I come from a traditional family dynamic, but my mom worked and went to school while I was growing up. I also prefer being more of an observer. I don't mind social media, but prefer a good book and behaviors exhibited by older generations.

B SLUSHER: Not really. I think my parents did a good job with my world/the world. They volunteered, gave generously, and provided me with an orderly life with many enriching experiences. (Of course, my mom was a teacher....) I didn't end up strongly involved in any church, so my giving has been socially, though I do think that teaching is a form of social work, which is a big part of its attraction for me.

If anything, this was a good reminder to keep an open mind.

It amazes me the amount of technology that is so accessible to the students today, we as teachers have to make sure that we are going with the, "times," and adjusting our lessons to what the students are more comfortable with. It really bothers me when you hear teachers say, "they are going to have to learn they way that I teach and I am not going to change." That is the wrong way to think about it. We have to make sure that we are making the students feel comfortable, because if we do not then we as teachers and the students will not be successful.

I am always looking for ways to change and meet the needs of my students better. This session opened my eyes to some of things that I can try to do differently to better engage my students. The need for generation Z to be so actively engaged in social media is alarming and thus sheds light on the enormous amounts of students with anxiety and depression issues. I personally steer away from social media because of some of the content that is on their. Some people nowadays have no filter and feel that because they have social media they can and do say what they want when they want. Where are the days of listening, pondering, and valuing other peoples ideas, beliefs, and opinions? It doesn't mean you have to agree...but can you disagree and still work together successfully?I realized from the questionnaire that the student I chose is very much like me. We have a lot in common even though we are from very different generations. While the generations change, there are some qualities that tend to transcend each generation.

I was a little shocked at the percentage of people from our generation that are involved church. I wonder what the percentage would be geographically. Those qualities transcend across culture, generations, and cannot be misunderstood. While it is always a good idea to take into account generational divides when dealing with students, or parents, it matters not what kind of technology they use or older people do not use. Empathy is always the key. I think though the hardest thing for me as a baby boomer is to accept the lack of attention younger generations have. And I have worked hard to overcome frustrations with that in the classroom.
