Troy, unfortunately, does not change.

In the scene, Troy becomes frustrated that Gabriel moved away. He is only upset by this because he will not receive Gabriel's disability check. This represents the selfishness of Troy's character. Troy's selfishness is also present when he crushes Cory's football dream because he believes money will make him happier than playing football.

The fence is another symbol used in the play to represent Troy's tendency to shut people out and keep distant relationships with his family and friends. The dysfunctional relationship Troy has with his son, Cory, is an example of how he often times distances himself emotionally. The fence also symbolizes Rose--she constantly attempts to keep her family within her "fence" by trying her best as a mother and wife.

The trumpet of the Archangel Gabriel is blown to open the gates of Heaven as the Apocalypse begins. By doing so, the righteous are saved from a horrific, godless doom. In stark contrast, Gabriel is unable to get the trumpet to produce a sound, despite so vigorously speaking of its purpose in Scene II Act 1. The instrument's silence ultimately demonstrates that Troy is not righteous and will not ascend to Heaven.

Gabriel's character also represents the absurdity of African American life during the 1950s. Many pieces of African American literature focus on the absurdity of the lives of blacks in the United States-- this absurdity comes from the lack of rights given to blacks from their own government which promises to insure those rights. Gabriel fought for his country and lost a part of his brain from it, and his brother was denied his right to play in the major leagues because of the color of his skin.

Literary Criticism (Baseball)

Within our scene, the religious allusion of Gabriel is used to demonstrate the absurdity of life in America for African Americans. Later, this idea of absurdity is integrated in Cory's pursuit of athletic excellence as his only means of achieving the American Dream, much like his father before him, who strove to achieve wealth and fame in athletics as well, in the classic America sport baseball. Baseball is symbolic of the American Dream and even in Troy's dying moments, he is unable to achieve it because of his race, and this in and of itself is an example of how absurd life was for African Americans in America. They were taught to be dependent on a society that had only ever limited their opportunities.
