We respond differently because the child is doing something we dont consider acceptable for example hitting others or screaming. When a child lacks a skill to do something it is easier when it doesnt include a behavior.

As a society, we are conditioned to "punish" a behavior rather than teach a skill, such as how to put belongings away. It would behoove us to make the efforts to teach and model what behaviors we would like to see.

It does not. People of all ages are not truly reformed through punishment. One must adopt an altruistic, more positive mindset and prioritize making choices that benefit both themselves, the school or classroom climate and society.

I think we, as adults, see something that is so naturally ingrained in us and expect for the child to innately have the same, forgetting that we had to be taught the behaviors that now come to us so effortlessly. I also think hard skills are a more concrete idea with very straightforwards ways of teaching and learning the skill. Soft skills are more abstract and I think we are often uncertain of how to teach and draw out those soft skills and each child is different, meaning each approach must be customized, again with abstract ideas which can be frustrating for the adult. I think that frustration then gives way to punishment instead of the positive reinforcement that should occur.

I beleive punishment without reason, or better yet, without affect is usesless and does more harm than good. For example if a teenager commits a crime and they're sent straight to juvinile detention or worse, tried as an adult and sent to prision, not only have we taught that child nothing (besides to not get caught the next time or that or society is unforgiving) but they become adults who still have not learned the correct behavior AND has the ugly scar of prision that will follow them forever more. After the emotional scaring of going to prision, being withdrawn from society, financial troubles that they may expereince, this teen who becomes an adult is now worse off in the world, when a simple positive intervention, reinforcement and a natural consequence (vs a harsh and harmful punishment) could have saved this teens life. Now this isn't to say that we need to do away with punishment all together. It can be useful, typically in extreme cases and as a LAST resort.

I feel that we respond differently to behavior than we do to other times a child lacks a skill because it is easier to formulate a response based on our emotions than to step back and analyze the situation for a solution. There is also not always as clear of a response. For example, if a child doesn't know how to ride a bike, the clear solution is to teach them how to ride a bike. Sometimes if a child is angry or overwhelmed and expressing themselves verbally or physically, it is easy to become upset or flustered and respond quickly in the moment. It takes more of an effort to respond to and teach behavior as a skill.
