The first empire was the Maurya empire. They gained land and power by force and taxes to remain in power. The ancient Indians didn't really have a choice but they were powerful for a few centuries. It was also hard to resist because they might be bound to their religion which was important. Then there was the Gupta empire. They thrived because they were more peaceful and less harsh. Their empire was more appealing and gained power not by force. They thrived longer and the people liked the Gupta empire more than the Maurya empire.
