The incumbent is the existing holder of a political office who normally has a structural advantage over challengers during an election for multiple reasons. In 2016 in the Montana Senate election there were 648,764 registered voters and 293,548 of them voted. There was about a 45.25% voter turnout rate. A voter in Montana must be at least 18 years old by Election Day.  A voter in Montana is required to present identification prior to receiving a ballot.

This public poll is telling us who people prefer, Rosendale vs Tester. The sample size of this poll is 2079 registered voters. The poll showed us that Tester is more likely going to be voted more by registered voters.There was a minus or plus 2 percent of marginal error.

Another poll from this website was conducted by Remington Research. They also did on poll on which candidate people were more likely to vote for, but this time it the sample was only likely voters. The sample was 2581 likely voters. The results ended in likely voters more likely to vote for Jon Tester. There was a margin of error of plus or minus 2%

The third poll was conducted by Gravis. They also did the poll on the same topic but this time their sample size was much smaller. The sample size was 469 likely voters and the results ended in again Jon Tester being the more likely voted candidate. There was a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.

Healthcare, corruption, and public lands access.

 Tester supports health care being provided by the government while Rosendale opposes this. They are also debating major corruption issues about how Matt Rosendale used his authority as state auditor to dismiss an existing case against owners of a Billings-based company. Another issue is public land access,  Jon is fighting to keep public lands in public hands while Matt is trying to transfer public lands to individual states. All of these positions are in line with their respective party platform.
