Always give people a second change.

When Scott had betrayed her in middle school, she was so hurt and sad that she didn't listen to any of Scott's explanations. Instead she decided to tune him out completely and shunned him for two years until he went to her school. There, she encountered him a lot because he was in her classes and she decided it was to move through those old emotions that she pushed down. She talks about it with her friends and they tell her parts of the situations that Parker had ignored at the time. She was ready to listen and gave Scott a second chance to talk about his side.

You can't do everything on your own; you need people to guide you and help you learn.

Parker was sick of being treated like she was a charity case because of blindness and wanted to be treated like everyone else. She didn't show her emotions because she was afraid that she would look vulnerable. She doesn't like people to help because she wanted to show people that she could do everyday things just like a normal person, a person who isn't blind. However throughout the story she encounters problems like her conflict with Scott and the death of her father. Her friends help her with these issues and she figures out that talking with people really helped and that sometimes you need people to help you learn and grow as a person.

This theme is significant because it indicates Parker's character change and from this we learn more about Parker's character . Ultimately from this theme we understand that Parker is social and is very loyal to her friends.

It also relates to her friend Sarah, at the beginning of the story the lecturer discussed that when she was a little girl she didn't complain because she knew her parents had experienced things that was worse than being blind. Sarah was afraid to talk to Parker about her problems because she knew they wouldn't compare to Parker's and she didn't want to sound ungrateful.
