Repetition

Repetition: the recurrence of an event or action. Naturally repetition in music would mean a repetition of a beat, sequence, note, melody, ect. Repetition plays a crucial role in determining how memorable a musical piece or song will be. Ratliff, in Every Song Ever , discusses how repetition can be both good and bad. He uses the alarm of a car as an example of bad repetition and uses the song Ain't it Funky Now by James Brown as an example of good repetition. The alarm clock is annoying because there is no variation. I agree with that point because variation is needed for repetition in order not to get annoying. It would be like hearing the same joke over and over again, eventually you would have to switch it up.He also mentions that repetition no matter how good art can't last forever; what he means is that repetition suggests infinity, but a song that actually lasts infinity would drive us crazy/insane. I agree with Ratliff's idea that art (music) can't be infinity, because after a while of listening to my favorite song it becomes a bore. In Ain't it Funky Now by James Brown it is very clear that the guitar, horns and drums are repetitive. In the song James Brown asks one of the band players "Do you like it?" over and over again until the band member finally agrees, "sure is funky now". That short dialogue I feel sums up the effect of repetition; at first you might not like a song but because of the repetition it makes you remember it and eventually like it.

In this padlet I will give examples of bad repetition and good repetition as well as how bad repetition with a little of variation can make for good music.

Repetition in music is good. In fact most of our favorite songs are repetitive and we play them repetitively. However, a song can only be so long and can only have so much variation. If your favorite song were to be on loop for infinity you would hate it.

Here is an example of repetition that lasts too long. A 30 second clip of the song wouldn't be so bad and would be pretty catchy, but a 10 hour song of the same thing over and over again? No thank you. I can only imagine what infinity would be like.

Repetition is not just an element of music but an element of art in general. For example, this optical illusion is cool to look at but it repeats too much. So much that it hurts your head if you look at it for too long. I think that same concept can be applied to music.

"In music there's imagined to be a general split between two orientations: variation and repetition. But it's not a pure split. They coexist in music, as they coexist in nature" - Ben Ratliff

Music is the combination of variation and repetition. Too much repetition and it wont be "good" music, however too much variation would feel like there is no pattern. An example of too much repetition would be an alarm clock, while an example of too much variation would be random playing of keys on a piano.

In this video the uploader uses the super repetitive alarm sound to create a song and uses other sounds as well to create variation in the song. This is an example of taking bad repetitive sounds and giving them variation in order to create music.

In this photo we can see the tree repeating same pattern over and over but at the same time we can see that this pattern varies. The branches branch out similarly but at the same time they branch out uniquely. Music does very much the same thing.
