My known world

I was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and I am currently studying at Tecnológico de Monterrey. For 18 years of my life, I attended the American School of Tegucigalpa and when I graduated in 2022, I moved to Monterrey to adventure in university. The known world for Campbell is the miracle of circulation of life in the universe, the author describes it as “sign of God’s grace; God’s grace is the food of the soul; the lightning bolt is the harbinger of fertilizing rain, and at the same time the manifestation of the released energy of God.” (Campbell, 38) Here he isn’t directly referring to what the known world is, but his idea of the world and its mysteries, how it develops. He states that it comes from an invisible source, the point of entry being the center of the universe, with living creatures like the tree of life, the immortal being, the cosmic mountains, etc. The known world for me is high school, it is the environment I’m used to, everything I have known and learned about for the past 4 years of my life. I am used to the work and the friends that have been with me during this time of my life. This relates to Campbell’s concept because he explains how the known world is his idea of how the world is and how it develops, and during 4 years of high school that becomes your perspective of life in terms of friendships, relationships, work, etc.

Call to Adventure

I left my known world and took the call of adventure, which according to Campbell is “a blunder” that reveals an “unsuspected world, and the individual is drawn into a relationship with forces that are not rightly understood.” (Campbell, 46) He says that this call is usually unsuspected, the blunders are desires and conflicts that are later inflicted on the characters. The call to adventure happens to bring the character into a world of fantasy. In the example by Campbell, this happens in a fairytale style, where a princess goes into a dark forest, and she talks with a frog. It involves a mix of characters and settings that are surreal. My call to adventure was when my father suggested that I study at Tecnológico de Monterrey, since he was a student there. He told me to get information on the inscriptions and make my application for the next 4 years of my life. This relates to Campbell’s concept because he describes it as a call into a world of fantasy, usually unknown and full of unsuspected events and conflict. For me, this campus was unknown, and I had no idea the world I was entering, it was a very new experience for me and a call to enter a different reality in my life

Supernatural help

After receiving this call, I received supernatural help from the outside world. As Campbell describes, this aid usually happens with an old crone or an old man. This figure has some type of supernatural powers that finds the character hopeless and in desperation to get to their destination. When they encounter the character, they send them some help. This figure represents “benign, protecting power of destiny.” (Campbell, 66) It gives characters hope and a reassurance that they are being supported and there is an omnipotent force watching over. My example of supernatural help was the mentor who helped me all during my application process. This is because when you are applying to university, you encounter many challenges since it is something new for us, we don’t really know what’s next in the process and we have a hard time doing it by ourselves. This relates to Campbell’s concept because he describes this help as an aid that has powers that finds the character when he/she is hopeless and in desperate need for help. These mentors are sent by the school to aid us in this confusing stage of application.

First threshold

When I have received the help, the time to cross the first threshold comes, which is a guardian that limits the characters to cross over a boundary awaiting darkness and the unknown danger. The hero is guided to this place and the guardian’s job is to proudly block them from crossing it. They protect the unknown that lies behind the barriers, the dangers and the creatures that the hero might encounter. The author says that the watcher can’t be challenged, “And yet—it is only by advancing beyond those bounds, provoking the destructive other aspect of the same power, that the individual passes, either alive or in death, into a new zone of experience.” (Campbell, 75) My first threshold as an example was when I got admitted to the campus, and it was the first day of classes. You must cross the gates and go into the campus, confront the new classes, new buildings and new teachers and classmates. According to Campbell, this is the stage in the hero’s journey where the character must cross a boundary where inside, danger and new experiences await. In my case, the guardians and the gate were the opening of the campus, and inside were the experiences and the new adventures of finding my classes and getting used to the campus.

The tests

Once I got to the campus, and started soaking in all of the new experiences and learning that I would be intaking in this new stage of my life, I realized that maybe finding my classes wouldn’t be my only problem. One challenge I face is adapting to the new style of learning that university has for me. I feel like we all grow up being used to a certain style of working in school and being at home, and when you go to college and live someplace else, you have to adapt to a new environment and change your routine. This is the problem I faced when I first arrived, and to get over it, I need to create my own space and responsibilities, create a routine I like so that the adaptation becomes more fun and easy. Also, try to focus on my path and the advances I am making, do my work on time, do the hobbies I enjoy, so it all seems easier for me. This way, I create a habit and I am able to turn it into a routine that will help me build my future years of university. The second challenge I face is feeling like I am a failure and like I haven’t made any progress in my professional as well as academic life. I feel like this is a problem I face because sometimes I go through difficulties like a hard class, or I feel very alone in my journey. To get through this, I have to stop comparisons and enjoy the time I have with myself, this way I can get to know myself better, what I like, and how I am at overcoming challenges. The third challenge I face is that sometimes I am way too peaceful with everything and I try too much to go with the flow. This might seem ideal, but it really isn’t when it comes to making decisions, or being a leader. I hardly ever get too stressed or speak up for myself, I only deal with problems on my own, which then lead to me feeling lonely and as if I have no company. To overcome this, I must leave my pride aside, and let people come to me, open up to help and allow mentoring in my process. Especially in university, I need to leave the ego aside and get help whenever I need it, because it is not easy to go through everything alone. I deal with many classes, knowledge and new challenges everyday. These challenges were some inner battles that I knew I was going to face during these years, besides from all the pressure of being new on this campus.

Mythological creature

I related these challenges to 2 mythological creatures, which symbolize much more than just these monsters, they symbolize deeper problems and attributes from someone. The mythical character that relates to the first two challenges is the rabbit, from the elegant forest. This is because it says she has been through a lot, so she has a hard time with new people and new environments, but she has qualities that allow her to adapt to new conditions, and just like in my challenge, I have to be able to adapt to the new environment despite what I have been through. I like how the rabbit is a metaphor to my own challenge because of the way it brings the past into its conflict, which is something I tend to do often. The past is what is stopping us both to move on and get past our fears of adapting in new environments. Also, because as her characteristics say, she is very scared of meeting new people and moving on in her life, because of the past, so she would rather not do anything new. I believe this relates to my own challenge because of my past habits of being used to easier work and school. I am scared of the future and my future career and academic life, so this makes it hard for me to focus on the present and my current life. Despite this, just like the rabbit I too have abilities that make me able to adapt to new circumstances, so I am sure I will be able to overcome my fear and be able to be more present in what is going on now. The character that relates to my third challenge is the elk, which is from the elegant forest. This character is full of peace and harmony, loves spending time alone, and his favorite place to be is in the middle of the forest by himself. If someone needs him, they know where to find him. He likes to be alone to focus on himself and his thoughts, and I think I relate to him because I too think I can do everything on my own and love my alone time. Although I agree with him, I don’t always think it is a great idea to be this isolated and focused on ourselves all the time.

Mentor

I like the comparisons to these mythological creatures because they show how change can happen, and how adaptable I am to some circumstances that will eventually show up in my path. These creatures faced some challenges, but the way I related it to my own experience is because not only did I have to face them, but I was able to receive help and aid for what I was going through. To face these challenges, there is a time that comes when we have to accept that we can’t go through them by ourselves and that is when a being comes to aid us in our process. This aid is the mentor, which is like a type of “teacher” who helps you. According to Campbell, the mentor is the Queen Goddess of the World where the hero overcomes the test and the quests he has been challenged in his supernatural passage, he has crossed all the barriers. He is at the central point of his passage, he rests, he stays for a few days free of challenges and quests. The figure of the Goddess is purposely used as a mentor to show the protective instincts of a mother, the nourishing presence it might bring. The mentor is the teacher assigned to you during your first semester that supports you and helps you in any way you need. She is there to answer your questions and make you feel as if you can rely on someone on campus. It relates to Campbell’s concept because he says the mentor is the Queen Goddess where the hero can rest, relax and be free of the challenges and difficult tasks for a while, and I like to think of my mentor as someone who makes me feel at peace. She helps me with the challenges I face as a first semester student and has been there by my side all the time.

Temptation

After getting all the help needed in campus, I was starting to get more of the routine that goes around my daily life, and all the challenges I had started to become smaller once I received appropriate help and made the right approach to try and solve them. A bit more trouble came when I faced temptation, which usually caused some conflict and it certainly did challenge my everyday life of my first semester. In Campbell’s theory, the temptation that the hero faces goes around a woman as a temptress. Women and marriage with the hero are his mastery, it represents he is the father, and they are in the same place, the hero has passed all the tests prior to being in the marriage with the woman. Although this happened, the purpose of the passage is for him to see how he is in reference to general human behavior, how he is reflected in humans, his ideals, how he looks and takes life. We usually protect within everyone close to us our selfishness and the fullness of our pushing fever, when instead we should consider how unpleasant that can be to others. At campus, there are a lot of coffee shops and little stores where you can relax, take some coffee, work and spend time with your friends. I consider this a big temptation for me because I love coffee and I love being in company with my friends at shops like this, so to avoid being late to class and spending all my money, I need self-control and restrict myself to go to these places every day. This relates to Campbell’s concept because the temptation for him is like a woman to a man, he must show how he views human ideals, how he behaves and how he looks at life. Like my own experience, I need to gain self-control and look at life in consideration to my education and my budget.

To overcome all of the challenges and new dangers after crossing the threshold I found out what my sword, mace and shield are. My sword is my discipline, because no matter how many problems I’m put with, I have overcome all of them with hard work and most of all I have always showed up to class even on the hard days. My shield is my good heart and adaptability, because I know that even in hard situations I will always be myself and be kind to everyone around me, which will only bring me good things always. I know I have reached almost the end of this beginning passage, I have crossed the first danger barrier and have met my mentor and what my temptations and challenges are. Despite these, I was able to get through them, and to all the future trouble, I know I will be able to overcome them too with my sword and shield. The monster are the mythical creatures worst traits, which are the fear of getting in a new environment and being lonely, so my superpower to fight these traits will be perseverance, to always get better at what I do and always have a positive view on new experiences and new people, so that I fight the urge to try to solve everything on my own. I can be a superhero, but all superheroes eventually need some help.

The final stage is the final gift, which according to Campbell is, “If the hero in his triumph wins the blessing of the goddess or the god and is then explicitly commissioned to return to the world with some elixir for the restoration of society, the final stage of his adventure is supported by all the powers of his supernatural patron.” (Campbell, 182). This passage from Campbell shows that after the journey has been successfully passed, the hero gets a blessing from the Gods and not only that, but if he fails to get their approval from getting the trophy, he is faced with a final pursuit from gods or demons. The final gift that the hero gets is the ultimate approval that his quest has ended. For me, my final gift was how much my work paid off in classes. Despite all the challenges I had at first, I excelled in all my classes and had a successful report grade. I completed all my tasks for each day while still paying attention to my hobbies. According to Campbell, the final gift is the ultimate approval that his quest has been successful, and all his work paid off, which is how I felt when I got the grades I wanted and fulfilled my potential academically and personally.

This master is the one who can cross from world to world, back and forth, making apparitions from time to time, without contaminating each other’s principles. The master can go from one door to the other and respect each of the divisions if he received the final gift. The master is not afraid of the next moment, but he remains in form. This stage for me is when I succeeded in my classes the first day, and the days consecutive to that, so now I could have a balance between doing my homework and studying, while also doing the things I love in my alone time. After each semester, I will have much more knowledge than the past one, I will be ready to tackle everything that happens to me. I will be able to contribute my knowledge to friends, family and my community. I will dream big and be able to accomplish all my long term goals of finishing university, passing my classes, and meet many people on the way. Like Campbell describes, this stage is when the hero can bounce from world to world without contaminating each other’s principles, so I could participate in classes and academically, while also working out, reading, spending time with my friends, and not affecting each other negatively
