Olivia Rodrigo, 'traitor'

The song "Traitor" is part of Olivia Rodrigo's hit debut album 'Sour'. A heart wrenching ballad that fan's love just as much as her first single "Drivers License", maybe even more. The instrumental on this track is very light. Now while the music may be soft, the lyrics certainly are not. The song is describing a relationship she was in, where she had a gut feeling that the guy she was dating liked another girl who he was "just friends with". Even though she knew, she never spoke out about it because she loved him too much to lose him. In the bridge of the song, she sings the lyrics "God I wish that you had thought this through, Before I went and feel in love with you". Those lines are personally my favorite in the track because they express so much emotion. She's describing how hurt she is and how much she wishes she could un-love this person because of what he's doing to her mentally. It's hard watching someone you're in love with fall in love with someone else. ISABELLA SIEJKOWSKI

Graice's known for writing music that just breaks everyone's heart when they listen to it. "I Miss You, I'm Sorry" is from her debut album 'Minor'. She talks about a relationship she was in, which comes off kind of toxic. She misses the person she used to date, but their relationship wasn't healthy or stable. "I miss fighting in your old apartment. Breaking dishes when you're disappointed." Seems like they weren't very good in confrontational situations and couldn't handle their emotions without having a breakdown. Regardless of that, Gracie still missed them even though they treated her poorly. ISABELLA SIEJKOWSKI

Maisie Peters, 'Worst Of You'

This song is the epitome of letting somebody hurt you over and over again because you love them. Maisie says "I'd rather you walk all over me than walk away? So give me the worst of you, Cause I want you anyway". Now this line could be seen in many different perspectives. For example some might see it as "I can handle whatever you throw at me because I love you and we can get through this together". I view it as she's letting the person in her life she loves most just walk all over her because just that, she loves them so much. Her significant other doesn't deserve her understanding and willingness to be with them, so really she's just letting them think they can do anything and she'll stay.
Taylor Swift, 'august'

For those of who aren't familiar with the full back story to the creation of this album, then I'll give a brief explanation. Taylor has assured fans that 'Folklore' was inspired by her imagination. The storyline and characters in this album may or may not be fiction. She might've pulled names from her own life, and storylines that she's witnessed or experienced, but that doesn't make this about her. The song "August" could probably be interpreted in many different ways depending on who's listening. I see it is somebody getting attached or falling in love with someone else, but then realizing that the feeling isn't mutual. "'Cause you weren't mine to lose" explains how the person in the song has to let go of their attachment, but they weren't necessarily ever "theirs" in the first place so they have no reason to be upset.
Olivia Rodrigo, '1 step forward, 3 steps back'

"1 step forward, 3 steps back" is another sad ballad on Olivia's debut album. She feels as though she lets the person she loves dictate her emotions or how she feels about herself. "I hate that I give you power over that kind of stuff." The person she's with picks and chooses when they like her and don't like her, which whole heartedly just hurts. "'Cause it's always one step forward and three steps back. I'm the love of your life until I make you mad." Some fans have speculated that this song is a parallel to Taylor Swift's song "New Years Day" since the music was sampled from that track. But fans think she used it explain that she wanted the kind of love Taylor describes in New Years Day, but she got the love in 1 step forward, 3 steps back.

Olivia O'Brien, 'Complicated'

This interesting twist on the popular song "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne brings a new light onto the lyrics of this once pop punk track, to make it seem sadder. Listening to it slowed, different instruments backing up the vocals, and different singing style, you tend to appreciate it a little bit more. Olivia does a really spectacular job at keeping its original authenticity, but also bringing her own approach, and making it just as good as Avril's. Relationships are complicated, and they become even more complicated when the person you like is all of a sudden acting like a different person when it's not just you in the room. You don't know what to think and you just can't keep up with them at that point. ISABELLA SIEJKOWSKI
