My name is Deron my dad passed away soon after I was born. My mom used to take care of me but not anymore. My aunt Jessie has been taking care of me and my sister Miley for 5 years. She's a hard worker but she doesn't get that much money. During school I get free breakfast and free lunch, in the summer it is hard to get 2 meals a day. The Committee center gives us a lot of food. If we didn't get food from the Committee center we wouldn't have enough. Life is expensive and we didn't have any options, I needed to support my family in any way i could to get groceries on the table says aunt Jessie. We went to the food bank for 6 months even though aunt Jessie was working and we weren't embarrassed because we needed help. I just don't think about the past anymore. I look forward to the future where I get a job and an education. What i've learned is that i'm strong enough to keep going.

There are countless causes for people becoming food insicure but the most common one is poverty. Poverty means that you don't have enough money to afford basic needs (food, water, shelter). Unemployment, criminal background, and bad financial decisions, all of these can lead to poverty. Unemployment is where you do not have a job this is usually caused by, bad education, your employer going out of business, segregation, or just not being able to find a job. Having a criminal background ties into unemployment but it means that if you have been involved in crimes it can make it much harder to find a job. Bad financial decisions are decisions that have to do with money some examples of this are, gambling, smoking, bad investments, not paying taxes, or over spending. These are some of the leading causes of poverty in the United States.
