This stage is very crucial for the children. If the child is cared for consistently they will form a bond of trust with the parent. If there isn't care for the child they won't feel a bond of trust with the parent.
If a child is to get through a crisis it is built on hope. If this child was to be left or lost There is hope in the childs mind from the parent caring for it in the past is the only thing getting the child through.

This stage is based on Encouraging the child to become more independent. The children in this stage need to be supported in being able to do little things on their own.
I have an older brother so My parents would let us go outside together or play in a room by ourselves. I was able to do things by myself lots of times with always having and older brother I could count on.

This stage of Erikson's development is about social interaction. The children start to get into school and attempt to make friends. This tests the childs social skills at the beginning of their life.
A challenge a child could face throughout this phase of life is guilt. If a child is overly disciplined throughout life they can be faced with lots of guilt and will be hesitant to try and make friends in the early years of school.

In this stage the childs school life takes a bigger role in life. The teachers are a main source of influence, and the social group also takes a bigger role in the self esteem of the child. The parents are still important but the child is learning a lot more about the world and themself with less and less guidance as time goes on.
If a child were to receive negative feedback from his/her group of friends this could hurt the child. The emotional state of the child could be weakened because of the friends not being nice to the child.

This is when adulthood really starts to come to mind. You think about what occupation or future life you want to have. Your role in society starts to become clear as the years go on.
A struggle for a teenager or young adult is loving their own skin.

As we get old we start to feel unproductive. In this unproductive feeling we can either have ego integrity or feel despair. If there is success in exploring our life in retirement we can feel a sense of wisdom. If there is an unsuccessful enjoyment of retirement there is an unsettled, unfinished feeling left in life.
