I would consider myself pro vaccinations, however, after watching the video and reading the interview I believe that each mother has a valid argument. My brother and I grew up following a scheduled vaccination plan, so I have never considered delaying mine/my future children's vaccines, although this may change in the future. Celina stated that she feels as though it is her responsibility to vaccinate her child, in order to keep not only her family, but other members of her community safe. I believe that vaccines do help to protect the community, and they are an important part of health care.

I never thought about the delayed vaccination route: where the parents of a child wait until the child's immune system is developed to administer vaccinations. Hearing this, I do understand why parents decide to do this. The video discusses two different viewpoints on vaccinations, and although I find both arguments valid, I am pro-vaccinations.
Nevertheless, I enjoy hearing why people may be against and understanding what factors may play into that decision/ viewpoint.
I found Danielle's response to Q7 interesting. She says that as her son gets older and takes part in activities, her thoughts may change. I guess that makes sense, but then I wonder, why not get vaccinations beforehand to avoid that?-it can definitely go back and forth-I just find it intriguing.

All of the mothers brought up ideas I hadn't thought about before, however right now I would consider myself pro vaccinations. My opinions may change once I have a child on my own but as of right now, I would feel safe having my child get all recommended immunizations. This is because I feel as though it is my job to keep both my child and those around them safe from disease, much like what Celina said.

I have never considered the delayed schedule for a vaccine, and I do think it has both pros and cons, but ultimately it makes sense to wait a little bit for a childs immune system to develop on its own. That being said, I noticed a lot that with the woman who was more or less anti-vax, she stated her concern was "my child" and that "my kids are healthy". There was also the argument that they don't have to be worried about their kids being around other kids because they know those kids are vaccinated. I personally believe that that is a very selfish and inconsiderate mindset. If you care about your community, you vaccinate for the children that do not have access to vaccines/other medical treatment, and that have a compromised immune system, and do not rely on other families to vaccinate their children. I believe there are excellent points made from both sides, but I am definitely pro vaccinations.

That being said, I grew up with a scheduled vaccination plan, so I never really knew about/considered the delayed schedule for a vaccine. Right now, I would consider myself pro-vaccinations, but my opinions may change once I have a child. I can see the logic in waiting for your child's immune system to fully develop before starting to put foreign things in their body that carry potential risks, however I do believe that it is every parents job to keep their children as well as other's around them safe, which for me right bow means having your child receive all the recommended vaccinations.

After watching the video and reading the interview, I have a better understanding of why a parent would not vaccinate their child. The pro-vaccine mother described how most anti-vaccine parents believe that they are protecting their children, and since they believe this I understand their reasoning. Nevertheless I disagree with this viewpoint, and I think that it is hard for people that don't have a science background to do the right kind of research regarding the efficacy and safety of vaccines. The anti-vaccine mother mentioned that the community remains safe because most children have received vaccines, so I think her position that her children should not have to is selfish. It also puts children who cannot receive vaccinations at a higher risk.

While I do understand both viewpoints, I feel that I would consider myself to be pro-vaccination and when I do have children of my own I most likely will follow the normal vaccination route and have my child receive all recommended immunizations. However, considering that I am not a parent right now, this opinion is subject to change and I do feel that before making the decision to vaccinate my child I will look into all options and take the next steps from there. Ultimately, all parents want to do what is best for their child, and personally, I feel that as a parent I would want to do everything I can to not only keep my child safe, but also those around them by choosing to get them vaccinated.

After exploring both the videos and interview, I have gained a greater understanding of why someone would choose not to vaccinate their child, or choose a delayed vaccination schedule. Although both mother's in the first video had a good rationale, I think Karen had a more selfish mindset, while Celina's viewpoints emphasized the importance of community health. One thing that stood out to me was when Celina said, "We can't outsmart a microbe"—a concept that has surely proven to be true given the events and lives lost over the past year and a half. It is clear that Karen has done lot's of research on the efficacy and potential side effects of vaccines as well. However, out of respect and care for babies, and any immuno compromised person, I will choose to vaccinate my children on a normal schedule, helping maintain not only my children's health, but the health of society as a whole.

Although they are possible complications in these vaccines I strongly believe that someones body should always be exposed to a bit of the virus whether is dead or a weaker version of it. And its the safest option to others and yourself as you will not realise that you have come in contact with a serious virus until you have symptoms which then is it too late.

As much as I want to be impartial and say that everyone is being fair, I can't help but strongly disagree and somewhat lack respect for Karen, as well as Danielle (but at a lesser extent, I can still respect her decisions as opposed to Karen). I understand their viewpoints, but I think that there is not only flawed logic in not vaccinating your child, but also a selfish mindset that comes into play. For example, Karen cited the potential for temporary neurological damage as a result of vaccines and said she's not fine with that risk, yet she later went on to admit that she'd be fine with temporary severe illness, which she admitted would be arduous, as a result of not vaccinating her child. Clearly there's two conflicting points to her logic. Similar to how Celine put it, I also think that it's egotistical to believe that you're "outsmarting" both a microbe and doctors who spent over 8 years studying science and medicine. I absolutely agree that parents should educate themselves on how vaccines work, and take precautionary measure in making sure they're safe, but when you're coming into conflict with just about the entire science community in thinking that it's safer to not vaccinate your child, at some point you have to realize there's probably a flaw in your understanding. Lastly, I think it's selfish to not vaccinate your child when there are many others who have children that cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, or for whom vaccinations are ineffective. These people don't have a choice in the matter, and by not vaccinating your child, you pose as a big risk to their children by not contributing to herd immunity. I can respect Danielle's decision to delay vaccinations even though I disagree with it, as there are some genuinely good reasons to do so. In fact, I even commend her choice to do testing after each vaccine to make sure she doesn't give her child unnecessary extra vaccines, but the fact that she doesn't feel the need to tell other parents that her children are vaccinated seems selfish to me. She will go out of her way to make sure the children her son interacts with are all vaccinated, but won't let other parents know something as important as her son not being vaccinated? I'm not sure about that. To conclude, I found it interesting to learn about the other side's viewpoints, but for the most part I still disagree with not vaccinating your children.

As someone who believes in vaccinations I feel that I agree much more with Celina. Karen talked about how she was sure her children were safe from the disease. However, I feel that there is no way for her to be sure. I feel that Celina's point resonated with me more, especially when she was talking about not wanting to risk letting her children get sick and infect others. After reading Mrs. Klen's friends perspective I thought it was interesting.
