I really enjoyed this video. By writing out the ‘problem’ the teacher provided a focus point for her lesson. Children were given the freedom to decide how they wanted to solve their problem and which tools to use. She guided the students with open ended questions, provided reminders as needed and gave them time to figure out the answer. I especially like the ideas of using photos as reminders of the various methods of solving the problem. She used advanced vocabulary (“strategy’ and ‘tally”) while she encouraged the children to collaborate and decide together if their answer was correct. This is a method I would like to use in the future. It will take practice on my part.
Alexandria

As I watched the CGI Math Video, I saw many great strategies the teacher used to help the children solve the word problem. First, she asked them to read the problem together a couple of times in order to comprehend what was being asked. She then asked the children to use their fingers to show her the number of cars. Using the body may help kinesthetic or visual learners. She also went over the vocabulary, "how many means put it together." The teacher discussed the different strategies they could use (draw, number line, fingers, tally marks) and let the children decide which strategy they would like to use to solve the problem. She ended lesson by asking the children to explain what they did to get their answers and then she asked them to prove it!
-Elizabeth Gil

I enjoyed watching the video. I can also say I learned from watching the video. Particularly, I liked how the teacher did not just have the children solve the problem but she also had them explain in their words how they found the answer and what strategy they used. The idea of having the laminated cards showing the different strategies was great! Teaching the students all those strategies and not just one is definitely beneficial to them. Having the children pick the strategy they wanted to use to solve the problem was great because every child learns differently and not all strategies work for all children. I also liked the vocabulary she was using when talking about the strategies what the words to was using when describing the problem and breaking down the meaning of "how many" and how that means to "put it together". Overall this is a great method to practice in the future.
-Christine Gonzalez

I think the teacher did a great job with explaining it and taking the time to review the question over and over for the two children. I also really liked how she gave them the choice of what props they wanted to solve the math problem with. The flash cards were a great idea and I will definitely use this technique in my classroom. I think it's great because everyone learns differently and it allows each child to express their way of how they want to solve the problem.

As I watched the video, I was impressed by the strategies the Teacher used with her students. A number of things stood out:
1) She writes the mathematical problem down on a large piece of paper and the first letter in every word is highlighted in Red, hence teaching Print and Math together.
2) She starts the lesson by reading the sentence slowly and clearly. She encourages the kids to repeat with her. She reviews it with them again.
3) Her next approach is to ask open-ended questions. She uses questions like, "How do you know?" "How many means what?"
4) She takes time to explain the strategies and lets the kids pick the ones they want to use, hence giving them the flexibility to learn using tools they are comfortable with. This is crucial. All kids learn things differently and she is cognizant of that.
5) She encourages them to talk about their strategies with her hence bringing the object of the lesson to full circle.

Overall I am inspired by this video and would be eager to try it in our classroom.

Every time the teacher spoke, she used math vocab, repetition (with words like: strategies, prove it, and even reading the story problem two times). She also asked open ended questions and listened to the children explain in their own words. She was very prepared with her materials and the children were able to choose which strategy they wanted to use. I love the visuals of the strategies she reviewed with them (strategies: draw, number line, fingers, and tally marks.) It takes patience and thoughtfulness in asking the open ended questions she did (like: How did you do that? Tell me about it. How did you know that? What did you do? Prove it. These questions are necessary now when learning math.
Maricarmen Jimenez
