Russia was considered an outcast to the European countries. Because Russia is located in both Europe and Asia, many European countries viewed Russia as "different"; however Russia was quite proud of their vast land and their location.

Additionally, while many European countries were encouraging a democratic approach to politics, Russia formed the Soviet Union, a communist government further pushing them into isolation. Russia attempted to be more western, but they never found the right balance between western and communism.

The Cold War

Following World War II, America and the Soviet Union were placed in charge of handling the world post-war. Both parties agreed to place their focus on Africa, Asia, and South America as these countries had just gained their independence. However, Russian politician's wanted these countries to be communist, while American politicians pushed for democratic societies and capitalist economies. These opposing views eventually led to the Cold War where both Americans and Russians threatened each other for forty years. The major concern during the Cold War was a nuclear war that could obliterate a major portion of both countries. Both countries were afraid of waving their white flag as it may be seen as a sign of weakness and cause the other country to begin a nuclear war. With both countries under the impression that the Cold War would last forever, American and Russian citizens prepared for a nuclear attack. Finally, after forty years of terror, the Cold War came to a halt when Russia began to turn from their communist ways.

They say, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer", and the United States of America did just that towards Russia. The United States and Russia have been allies in many wars including the American Revolution, World War I, and World War II. They fought side by side to defeat their enemies such as the British and Germany. However, the two world powers have many opposing views. Their opposing views have caused them to be skeptical of one another the past two centuries. As a result of their suspicions against one another, the U.S. and Russia have been enemies attempting to seek peace for the last two hundred years.

Is There Hope for Peace? - Russia and America's relations post- Cold War

While there has been much improvement between America and Russia's foreign relations, much skepticism is still seen among politicians and citizens. Many Republicans are still skeptical of Russians, and they believe a nuclear war is still a potential threat. Russia continues to see America as competition causing many Russians to view Americans as distrustful.

With Putin as the central figure leading the Russians, it seems as if Russia is moving back towards communism. Putin is a strong supporter of the Soviet KGB party, and has made a stronger push towards the return of the Soviet Union.

Following the Cold War, both Russia and America had to come to an agreement when it came to nuclear weapons. In 2010, under President Obama, Russia and America agreed on New START, a program that would limit the amount of nuclear weapons that each country had. Additionally the agreement limits the amount of spending on nuclear weapons as well as where they may be tested.

A major concern with New START is the reliability of the respective parties. Republicans believe missile shields should be put in place to protect Americans from a potential nuclear attack. Additionally, Republicans believe Russia could easily break the New START agreement. Democrats believe that missile shields could cause a potential nuclear war if their is a faulty in the system. After much debate on New START as well as missile shields, Congress approved New START by promising to keep the missile shields up.
