After attending a number of colleges, he initially became a lawyer in Essex County. Not too long after he was nominated a speaker for the House of Representatives in 1811. The president can nominate people for the position as President James Madison did for Joseph Story. His leading into the position as a supreme court justice wasn't controversial. Being the youngest person to be appointed to this position was quite a breakthrough. <br>A justice is supposed to side with the political party they have appointed themselves to varying with their opinion.
