Mandarin+Korean: home

I speak Mandarin with my parents, but I try to speak Korean to my little brother to let him learn a foreign language at a young age.

Wearing masks makes me harder to hear others. 

-I have to say “Sorry, could you please repeat that?” more often

-Fail to judge others’ reactions of what I just said since their faces are half-covered

-I give myself the English name “Hermione”, because I love Harry Potter.

-My first name is Xinhang. “Xin昕” means “dawn” and “hang航” means to sail.

--Lots of people cannot see their friends and families in person, so they have to use social media to make video calls

-More people have devoted their time into social media when the outdoor actives are restrained

-The professor would say hi to the class, but the students are usually muted at the beginning. However, in offline classes, students would greet the professor when they enter the classroom. 

-Due to different time zones, people would greet each other with “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” as well as “Good evening”. Also, in breakout rooms which work as group discussions, students would say hi to each other and ask what time it is in each one’s location. When the countdown of the closure starts, people would wrap up the discussion and say “see you in the main room”, which is distinguishable from usual classroom. 

-Students would unmute themselves and say thank you and goodbye while waving hands, but in actual classroom, most students would just leave without saying any leave-takings.”

1. In public, people prefer to use movable chairs.

2. There are often security guards and surveillance cameras in the neighborhoods where my group members live, acting as monitors. And because I am taking a driver’s license, I have been a voluntary traffic assistant for a period of time, which means that I am also a monitor in my  community.

3. all my group members mentioned that there are big supermarket or pharmacies near the communities where they live.

 In Zoom class, even in a group composed of all Chinese, we still speak English because it’s a class.

2. Mandarin:

When encountering strangers, such as salespersons, taxi drivers, I will use Mandarin because i don't know if he can understand my dialect.

3. Dialect:

I use dialect to communicate with my family and close local friends.

I noticed that Chinese people prefer to use profession to refer to someone instead of Mr/Mrs. For example, if I greet my elementary school teacher, I will call her Teacher Chen instead of Mrs Chen.
