Born in 1912, Gordon Parks lived in poverty ridden Kansas in his youth. Parks was not professionally trained in photography but got his start through the Farm Security Administration (FSA) that was gathering data on the conditions of the country in that time. This gave Parks the opportunity to show diversity and american culture through his works. Parks is remembered as a humanitarian, civil rights advocate, photographer, author, and film maker. His style of work is associated with the breaking out racial boundaries in art culture.

Source: http://www.gordonparksfoundation.org/

Tice was born in 1938 in Newark, New Jersey. He began practicing photography in 1953; Tice's works are almost entirely building and shots of small suburban and rural towns. They're often captured in solitude. Tice captures and transfers his prints to plates of silver gelatin and aluminum. This unique transfer approach gave Tice's works a unique appearance and made them key figures of landscape photography.

Source: http://www.peterfetterman.com/artists/george-tice

This black woman stands in front of the flag, the embodiment of the American dream, only to be holding a mop and broom. This image tells the viewer of the hardship of life as a minority in the states in the 50's and 60's, as we;ll as the irony of the American dream hanging behind her on the wall.
