The movie, “The Color Purple,” directed by Steven Spielberg is going to be my first media connected to my AP reading book. Due to the fact that this movie is based on the book I read, “The Color Purple,” by Alice Walker, it is not hard to find the connections between the two medias. In the film, the audience can see that the book was brought to life. Although the both pieces of work are similar, the film lacked what the book made special. In the book, a conflict between Suge and Celie arises when the two characters first meet. This established Suge’s dominance, and made Celie feel small. This is important because it shows the audience that Celie’s self-esteem will continue to go down unless something changes. In which it does, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

This statue was built by Marc Quinn, and modelled by Jen Reid, to symbolize the fight for equality. Although this was built in the spirit of 2020’s racial injustice fight, I believe it connects with Celie, and her fight for equality. In the book, Celie is tossed, turned, and thrown every which way, and it is very unfair, due to the fact that she was never given a chance. This statue shows us that not much has changed, still to this day. Of course it was (and is) much harder for black women to find their own equality. Black women do, and will continue, to find solidarity within one another, and that is one of the strongest bonds ever.

Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur is a book full of small, short poems. Most of the poems are used to cope with her trauma, and a lot of them are about sexual assault. Celie is a survivor of many sexual assault incidents, and I feel that most, if not all of the poems relate to her. Especially this one in particular, because it reminds me of when Celie spoke with Suge about how she closes her eyes and pretends she isn’t there when Mr. gets into the mood. Using the logic from the poem, Celie has never once had consensual sex in her life.

The show “Euphoria,” written by Sam Levinson has hard hitting topics, much like “The Color Purple,” written by Alice Walker. With topics surrounded by metal illness, sexual assault, and manipulation, the soundtrack in the tv shows brings out just as much emotion. In the soundtrack, written by Labrinth, it is orchestrated to where there are little to no words, but the music is heartbreaking. Slower tempos for more emotional scenes, and more up pace music for intense scenes. When Celie finds out that Mr. had been hiding all of the letters Nettie had written to her, the song “We All Knew,” off of the soundtrack would have fit perfectly to match how each character was feeling.

Recipe Examples: In the book, the setting in rural Georgia from 1909 to 1949. This means a lot of southern cooking, and original types of meals. A simple breakfast meal that is shown in the book and the movie contains pancakes with butter, ham steak, fried eggs, grits, biscuits with honey, and coffee. This sounds very similar to a meal you could find at an IHOP or a Denny’s if you’d like. In fact, On the IHOP’s menu, there is a build your own pancake entrée, which leads me to believe that this southern dish from almost 100 years ago is still a fan favorite in Southern America.

The theme of sexuality and it's fluidness: The common theme in the book, “The Color Purple,” is about sexuality and how it can be redefined. The death of Celie’s step-father illuminates this theme by providing a clear image of how Celie is free from him, and can do whatever she pleases. She had never experienced pleasure during those times with her step-father, or the man her step-father traded her to, so after he had passed, Celie was able to love Shug in the way that a man could. Secondly, Celie had grown to think that women like Shug should be looked down upon for having so many partners because of her step-father, but since he was no longer there to tell her the right from wrong she understood that Shug was just having fun and there is nothing wrong with that. In conclusion, the common theme of sexuality throughout the book is most illuminated when this change happened in Celie’s life.
