In 1503 he started the "Mona Lisa", which is his most famous work, and is quite possibly the most famous painting in the world. It is a portrait of a women who was probably the wife of Gioconda, a rich florentine merchant. It is known for it's mastery of technical innovations and the mysterious of the smiling subject.

It is the example of two techniques; sfumato and chiaroscuro of which Da Vinci was one of the first masters. Sfumato is characterized by subtle transitions between between color areas, creating a smoky, hazy effect. it is evident in the gauzy robe warn by her or her smile. Chiaroscuro is the technique of modeling and defining forms that contrast light and shadow. The hands of the sitter represent it with modulations of light and shade. It is now in the Louvre in Paris.

("Leonardo Da Vinci." Issues & Controversies)

His style innovations are even more apparent in "The Last Supper". He began this painting in 1495. It portrays the moment Jesus told his disciples "One of you shall betray me". Instead of showing the 12 apostles as individual figures, he grouped them in three's, isolating Jesus Christ, so he is the center point of the portrait.

He painted it with a mixture of oil and tempera, and he painted it on the wall of the refectory of a Dominican Monastery. The painting has been restored many times due to aging.

("Leonardo Da Vinci." Issues & Controversies)
(Facts On File, Inc. "Leonardo da Vinci)
