The men laugh and mock the women's obsession with seemingly insignificant things, however because of this, the women discover various potential motives. In the play, the women are constantly picking up on little clews and hints.

Titling this play "Trifles" refers to how the men believe that women worry about little, unimportant things, and how the women took that to heart and didn't show the men the evidence against Mrs Weight because they believed the men would just brush it off as a trifle and continue their own investigation.

Trifles is something of little value or importance, something irrelevant. In the short story, the men say that the women's only worries are "trifles". Naming the act trifles is ironic, because the evidence the women find is actually of great importance; it is the women's "trifles" that help them and allow them to solve the murder. The purpose of the play is to convey the message that the small things are important and should not be dismissed, because they make up the bigger picture.

Jackson: "Trifles" suggest that the play will involve something of little value. This also relates the motive of the crime, the killing of the canary, to a trivial thing. It makes the men look as if they are too preoccupied with "major" tasks to observe the trifles. This suggests that women may be more observant than men when it comes to determining the motive of a crime.
