  • Increased insight into student prelearning and learning - generates new ideas for me to contemplate, research further and perhaps include in my teaching.
  • I combined 'Increased reflection on teaching and learning among colleagues' with 'Promotion of new networks among members at institution' - I found that my curiosity about my teaching led me into areas where colleagues had greater theoretical understanding - helped built an informal community of practice.
  • Renewed excitement about teaching and learning, and greater self-awareness - certainly helped me to avoid staleness to always be thinking about how and what students learn and how to make things better

    • Firstly, SoTL acts as a further 'level' of feedback for the teacher / facilitator. E.g. one might state objectives at the start of the session (or Module, in the case of Extend NZ) and check to see if those objectives have been met at the end. SoTL would take that further by the teacher / facilitator examining how effectively the objectives were met. In 'Quality' terms, it is similar to the distinct levels of 'Quality Control' and 'Quality Assurance'.
    • Secondly, I agree with Nancy Chick in feeling it is important that a method of inquiry is developed that not only answers the 'interesting questions' but also fits with the nature (style) and expertise of the teacher / facilitator.
    • Thirdly, adopting a systematic approach to SoTL (e.g. thinking of every syllabus as a hypothesis, whose testing is done by reviewing evidence and re-designing based on findings) ensures that the SoTL process is repeatable and recognized by those you wish to share with.
    I note that Phil Handcock's final bullet point links with mine! (I promise I didn't read his first! :-) ) I also like that Phil mentions asking questions / seeking answers.
