Hey everyone, and welcome to my Padlet! My name is Maddie Corby (Miss Corby) and I am absolutely thrilled to be a new addition to your schools community as a new teacher. I have been eagerly counting down the days to when we get to attend our first class together. However, before we meet, I thought id share a bit about myself now, so that we can jump straight into a fun, safe and welcoming classroom when we meet.

I've recently completed five years of education based studies at Deakin University. Throughout these years, I've completed multiple placements ranging from working with the junior and senior year levels. All these experiences have made me very excited for spending a wholes school years worth of time with an individual class. Getting to witness growth within the classroom.

Personally, I am a bubbly, energetic and caring person who loves anything creative and arts based. My favourite colour is pink and I have a major sweet tooth, although I do love pasta A LOT too. In my spare time, I train in both dance and speed skating. I have a beautiful dog named Tilly who I do almost everything with. She loves swimming, going on walks and treats! We also love reading together. Tilly and I love listen to the Harry Potter series before bed. This way of reading through the books allows us to whined down before bed time whilst not missing any of the good parts. This book series is definitely my favourite as I can also go a watch the corresponding movies.

Along with nightly reading, each morning, I love completing the daily Wordle, Connections and Minis. These puzzles get my brain working early in the day and give me a challenge whilst extending my trivia knowledge and word skills.

The New South Wales Department of Education, Spelling Sequence, stage 2, centres around identifying the specific method to delivering phonological, orthographic and morphological awareness within lessons with effective instructions and support to all students through each stage of students schooling lives. Stage two of this sequence emphasises the continued use of repetition as a tool for supporting students growth. This repetition allows a greater focus on specific adaptations that may need adjusting to match a students needs. Many activities during possible lessons 'supports repetition so ensure attention is captured and focused' (Thomas and Thomas, 2021).

This document provides teachers with not only key terminology in order to break down the teaching and possible methods, but it also breaks down the different components that are focuses on and developed as skills for students literacy abilities.

Spelling Game:

'Word Builder'

The goal: to create the longest chain of words that are built off the base word, in this case being 'act'.

Students will take turns placing cards with prefixes or suffixes next to the base word.

Students will gain one point for each word created.

If students use both a prefix and suffix, they receive two points.

Bonus points are granted if the student can identify the meaning of the word created.

Within the classroom today, educators strive to prepare students for the world beyond their schooling years. When planning the content and ways to deliver the current curriculum, teachers spend extra time planning ways to engage students equally as much as educate them. One of the ways these goals can be achieved is by using real world examples and situations. This is a highly effective tool for many reasons, one being the connection students may have with certain examples being spoken about. These personal connections can cause a deeper understand of subjects as a more complex discussion can take place for longer periods of time.

Also, by the use of multiple types of text, students are encouraged to 'recognise the point of view', leading to a more thorough understanding of how literacy can be altered to relay meaning. Some examples of these types of resources could be as simple as a picture story book, for analysis on the way a narrative works. To the dissection of kids news websites such 'BTN' (Behind the News). BTN is a perfect resource to introduce students to literacy they may come across in the real world. The articles and video style new stories provide a more simple way to deliver todays top news stories. Students are able to build their 'critical thinking skills' by explore their questioning skills, having exposer to real world issues and examples, as well as understanding how other opinions can play a part in creating informative writing pieces in the news.

In the following example, the topic of 'Cyber Crime' is being focused on. This topic would engage students as it is familiar however will inform them on new, serious information. The main factor of this article, is the language and strategies being used. The use of informal language and rhetorical questions, draws students in as the layer of understanding the language is striped back to their level.

Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).
