Saffron's Migration journey scarf- My scarf shares the migration story of my family, the symbols I used were the famous buildings in both GuangZhou and Hong Kong and they show the how although I'm from Hong Kong, part of me is from GuangZhou. My migration story is that on my mother's side, both my great grandpa and grandma were from Guangzhou, and my grandpa was from GuangZhou, my grandpa later migrated to Hong Kong where he met my grandma. That would mean that my mom is from Guangzhou and Hong Kong, however, on my father's side of the family, they are all from Hong Kong for as far back as I can go, so this would mean that I am from both Hong Kong and GuangZhou, I used this pattern composition because I thought that the buildings along the coast of Hong Kong was a trademark of Hong Kong and how it is a famous landmark in Hong Kong, I did some research and found out that Guangzhou also has many tall buildings surrounding it, I also found out that the buildings from GuangZhou were also very famous, so I decided to use both Guangzhou's buildings and Hong Kong's buildings in my scarf design

My scarf shares the migration story of my mom, she was born in the inner Mongolian, and its culture is what I cannot forget. The symbols I used were the famous yurts and horses from Mongolian, they show that part of me is from Mongolian. My migration story is that on my mom's side, both my grandma and grandpa are from inner Mongolian. My dad, however, was born in Indonesia, but he then migrated to Beijing to work. Later on, my mom went to Beijing and met my dad. Where I am from is complicated, as part of me is Mongolian, part is Indonesia, part is china, and part is hong kong. I used this pattern composition because I liked the symmetrical design, whereas it's similar to inner Mongolian scarfs, with the symmetrical feature. The reason I used yurts and horses because it's a clear representation of the inner Mongolian culture.

This is my migration story, a story that I cannot forget even to this day.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbols that I used were the Yellow Crane Tower from Wuhan and the dim sum basket. The Yellow Crane Tower is a very famous landmark in Wuhan and the dim sum basket represents the traditional Chinese food in HK. They show that I am from Hong Kong but a part of my family is from Wuhan. My migration story is that my grandfather and grandmother from my mother's side are from Mainland China. My grandfather was originally from Fujian and he went to Wuhan to work, where he met my grandmother. When my mother was a child, they migrated to Hong Kong. Later, my mother met my father (who was born in Hong Kong) at a school in Ma On Shan where they used to teach. I used this pattern composition because it shows my migration map from outside to inside; the outside rim representing where my grandparents lived, the second layer representing my father and mother and the middle represents me.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbols I used were dumplings, specifically xiao long bao’s and jiaozi’s. They show that I am from Hong Kong, but also partly from Guangzhou and Shanghai. They are also really commonly found foods in Hong Kong, which is why I chose to include dumplings in my design. My migration story is that I am from Hong Kong, along with my parents. My grandpa, however, is from Shanghai, where he worked and grew up in. Years after graduating, he met my grandma, who had also came from Shanghai. They then altogether moved to Hong Kong, where my dad was raised as a child. On my mom’s side, her father had came from Guangzhou, but later on, decided to migrate to Hong Kong for business where he met my grandma on my mother’s side. Concluding that I am from Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. I used this pattern composition because the dumplings are a clear representation of where both me and my relatives are from, as well as what kinds of foods I like to eat. Dumplings are also traditional Chinese foods and were originated in China, which shows what the Chinese culture is like and how it is important.

My scarf shares the migration story of me and my family. I am from Hong Kong and so are my parents but on the other hand, my grandparents on my dad side are from Guang Dong and my parents on my mum’s side my grandpa is originated from Nanjing and my grandma is from Zhang Shan. I am closer to my grandparents on my mum’s side, my grandma migrated from Zhong Shan to Hong Kong and so did my grandpa so both of them met each other in Hong Kong while working. My scarf does show some aspects of my migration story, for example, the yin and yang symbol is really well known in China and that shows how some parts of my family originated from China, whilst the dumplings represent dim sum! The dumplings mean a lot to me because every week it’s a tradition for my mum’s side of the family to go and eat dim sum on Saturday and it’s the only time I get to see them. I really love this design out of all my other ones because this scarf truly does represent my migration story!

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbols I used in this scarf were egg tarts, dumplings, dim sum, and the yellow crane tower. I was born and raised in Hong Kong so I used one of Hong Kong’s famous foods, egg tarts. But my parents aren’t originally from Hong Kong. However, my family on my mother’s side is from Wuchang Wuhan, the current capital of Hubei province. The yellow crane tower is one of the famous icons in Wuhan which is why I used to it represent my mother’s side of my family. My mother was born and raised in Wuchang and after she graduated she went to Shenzhen where she met my father who went to Shenzhen from Shan Wei in Guangdong province to pursue work. They had a child which is my brother and later came to Hong Kong where I eventually was born and raised. This pattern composition tells my family migration story and representing where my family and relatives are from. There are many foods that are a big part of Chinese culture which is why I used egg tarts which is famous in Hong Kong and dumplings in this pattern to show my favorite foods and also how it represents me and my migration story.

My Scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbol I used in this scarf is one of the seven wonders in the world which is from India. To show that me and my parents were born in India. My family's migration story is that before I was born my parents and my sister had already moved from India to Bangkok since my father had started a new international branch of the original family business so we had to move. After 6 years of my birth, me, my parents, my sister and my 3 months old brother moved to Hong Kong due to the same reason why we had moved to Bangkok. I used this pattern composition because this pattern represents that I am from India. I liked that I made my pattern using one image to make it look plain and simple, although I have used only one image but it still represents my story in some way. For example, looking at my scarf people might think I migrated from India which is true. My migration story is quite simple so that is why I thought of keeping my scarf simple. Overall this scarf represents my Migration story.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbols i used are a wavy sea, kangaroo, a traditional symbol and a explosion at the background. I used the wavy sea because most of the places we lived were near sea which ever country it was. I have used the kangaroo because in my fathers side family they lived in Australia for few years. The traditional symbol doesn't mean anything, but it shows something similar to a Korean flag with some traditional things. The explosion in the background shows the wars happened when my grandparents were a teenager it shows the Korean war. My migration story is that all my family members are from Korea. I used this pattern composition because the symbol in the middle tells my nationality and where i am from. The kangaroo tells that my father has migrated to Australia for some time. The waves simply means the sea and where i lived and the explosions tells the wars and how because of the war we migrated.

My scarf represents my family's migration story. I'm from Hong Kong, and so is my dad. But my mum is from Guang Dong, so that's why there's the panda and kung fu, this represents china. The flower represents Hong Kong, because that's the flower in the Hong Kong flag, and it represents Hong. Then there's the dumplings, this also represents Hong Kong , as it is one of the most frequently eaten food in Hong Kong. The dumplings also represents Guang Dong, because it's also a very popular food there. My grandpa was originally from China, but he secretly swam to Hong Kong, where he meet my grandma, who's from china. Because my grandpa swam to Hong Kong it explains the waves in the bottom and top of the design. My great grandmother is now in Malaysia, but I don't think that has anything to do with me. In conclusion, my migration map is mainly from China (Guangdong), and Hong Kong.

My scarf shares the story of my family’s migration story. On the edges, you could see the four different cities that were featured a lot when studying my migration map. At the bottom, you could see the skylines of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My mom was born and raised there and most of my family members live there. On the right you could see the skylines of San Fransisco. This is where my dad was raised. On my dad’s side, my grandparents were originally from Shanghai but travelled to Hong Kong in the future. Shanghai is a important place in my family's migration story because a lot of them originally lived there. On the top, you see Hong Kong which was where me and my brother was raised in currently. I placed some smaller symbols such as the lanterns, the won ton noodles and the dragon. One of my parents favourite foods are from were in the place they were raised in, which was noodles (won ton noodles, and curry laksa). The flag of Hong Kong is to represent where I am living now and the different aspects of it. The lantern and the dragon symbolises the culture in Hong Kong as it is important to my family. All of this mostly describes my family's migration story!

My Scarf shares the migration story of my entire family as far back as I can go. The symbol I used is the famous Red Junk and it is a recognisable symbol of Hong Kong. My migration story is primarily based on China and Hong Kong where my ancestors came from. Starting off with my father’s side, he is a local resident who was born and grown up in Hong Kong. My grandfather is also from Hong Kong but my grandmother is from Guangzhou (China). My grandfather’s parents resided in Taishan (China). My grandmother’s parents resided in Shande (China). My grandmother’s grandparents were also from Shunde (China). Moving on to my mother’s side, she was born and grew up in Hong Kong. My grandfather is from Jieyang (China) and my grandmother is from Chaozhou (China). My grandfather’s father was also from Jieyang (China) and my grandfather’s mother was from Puning (China). My grandmother's parents were from Chaozhou (China). The parents of my grandmother’s father were from Chaozhou (China). The parents of my grandmother’s mother were form Meixian (China). All of my grandparents migrated to Hong Kong from mainland China when they were teenagers. My parents met in Hong Kong where they lived in the same university residential hall. They have relocated to the UK and US for ten years. I was born in the US before my family returned to Hong Kong. From my migration story, I have a strong tie to Hong Kong. I used this pattern composition because the Red Junk represents old Hong Kong which was around the time my grandparents migrated to Hong Kong. The Red Junk represents Hong Kong as it is a wooden sailing boat which was used since the Song Dynasty. They were used by merchants to carry goods along rivers and canals. Hong Kong is a coastal city where was a fish village in the 19 century. Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour was once filled with glorious red sailing boats but soon they disappeared one by one with the change of the economy. To preserve the dying art of the Chinese junk boats, the Aqua Luna widely known as the Red Junk was built. The Red Junk soon attracted many visitors and tourists which made it a recognisable symbol of Hong Kong nowaday. In my design, I arranged the Red Junks in a pyramid shape compositing 1, 2, 3 and 5 junks on each row. The size of the junk decreases with the increase of the number. The repetition of junk and pyramid formed lines and finally showed letters “HK”. This can communicate my migration story clearly as it is very straightforward. It also helps the audience to understand my home in Hong Kong even if the audience does not understand the history of the Red Junk.

My scarf shares the migration story from my grandparent's generation onwards. The symbols I used are the popular Vegemite, Victoria Bitter, Fishballs and egg tarts. All of them are popular in their own country and cities. My migration story is based Hong Kong, China and Australia. I used these images because I enjoy eating these items apart from Victoria Bitter because it is a beer. I used egg tarts and fishballs because they represent where my grandparent's both on my mother's and father's side came from, even though they did migrate from different provinces in China. they still spent most of their lives in Hong Kong. I used Vegemite and Victoria Bitter because they represent the time where my grandparent's from my father's side migrated from Hong Kong to Australia when my father was still a kid along with my uncle and aunt. My grandfather believed that Australia would be a better place from my father, uncle and aunt to grow up. He thought that the education system was better than Hong Kong at the time. During that time, Hong Kong only had a few universities while Australia has 2-3 more. During WWII, my grandfather on my father's side was separated with his father(my great-grandfather) , he was with his great-grandmother (she is 101 right now!). Eventually, they met up again but my grandfather's father thought they passed away so he re-married and had 11 babies. Now my grandfather has 11 siblings half of them migrated to Taiwan, the other half migrated to San-Fransisco. I still go to Australia to visit my grandparents, when I arrive, I would go to the supermarket and buy a lot of things such as Vegemite, candy and many more things, while my grandfather would go to the local winery to buy wine and beer even though we have a lot in the fridge! I heard that my grandfather's favorite beer is Victoria Bitter as well. I used this pattern composition because I really like the symmetrical pattern, the number of each image is unique because it would the represent the quantity of items we would get every time we bought any of these items. This is why Vegemite, Victoria Bitter, Egg Tarts and Fishballs are part of my migration scarf. This represents me and my complicated migration story.

My scarf represents the migration story of me, my dad and my grandparents. Me, my dad and all the relatives on my dad's side all come from Malaysia. In 1997, my dad cam to Hong Kong to look for a job and settle down. Even though I live 2400 kilometres away from Malaysia, a big part of my childhood resides there. Every summer, me and my dad will go to Malaysia to visit relatives. Everytime I go to Malaysia, I will always remember the iconic city skyline. My scarf has a simplistic with a black background with white silhouettes. I used a simple and representative design to portray my image of Malaysia. The scarf consists of the city skyline of Malaysia and the flag symbol of Malaysia. Malaysia is a big part of my childhood and whenever I look at this scarf design, I will think back to my joyous childhood memories.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. Both my parents were from Hong Kong, and my grandparents and great grandparents on my dad's side are from Hong Kong as well. However, my grandmother and grandfather migrated to Hong Kong by swimming 4 kilometres at night, and escaping China. At the time, China was not exactly the ideal living place, but none of the general public was allowed to leave, and if you were caught trying to escape you would've been shot. I used symbols such as egg tarts and fishballs because these symbols can clearly represent and give an idea of Hong Kong, as they are popular foods here. I used this pattern composition because I think that they reflect well on the objects or symbols that I chose on importance to me, as all these symbols I chose have meaning to me and represent something else. These symbols of food may seem like they don't mean much but it brings me a sense of nostalgia and importance because they're a big part of where I live and where my family has lived or migrated to.

My scarf has three objects, two hats and one food. My scarf may seem basic, but shares the migration story of my family. First I will start with my father's side. My grandparents on my father's side worked in Hong Kong and were indigenous villagers of Hakka. They moved to London in 1969 as migrants because of work opportunities and a better life. My dad was born in 1970, and later my two uncles were born. After working for a while in the uk, my dad moved to Hong Kong for work and so did his siblings. Now for my mother's side, which starts when my grandmother was born in Coruna, Spain. Spain had a religious dictatorship, and my grandmother wanted to go to Venezuela at the age of 20. So she had to go to church all the time, if not the Priest would not let her leave to Venezuela. After 7 years she returned to Galicia where Coruna is, and married my grandfather then my aunt was born. After that my mother was born, and then my uncle. My mother moved to Madrid at the age of 18, and moved to Hong Kong at the age of 29 and found my father then got married. 5 years later my sister was born, and then I was born four years after that. The Chinese straw hat symbolise my Hong Kong Indigenous blood, the london police hat shows my grandparent's migration to London, and the spanish hame symbolises Spain where my mother's side is from.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. The symbols I used include an actress from cantonese opera, Lion Rock mountain, the Bauhinia flower, and the famous buildings of Hong Kong. As my family mainly comes form various cities in Guangdong Provence, cantonese opera is something very prevalent in those regions. My grandarents and great grandparents really like to watch cantonese opera, they even brought me to watch it with them when I was 2 years old. The Lion Rock is a famous landmark in Hong Kong, this was also where the "Lion Rock spirit" was named after. "Lion Rock spirit" started at approximately 1970s (which was my parents' generation), we can tell that Hongkongers are very intact with the "Lion Rock spirit" because this was something brought back up by teenagers recently. This proves that the "Lion Rock spirit is something remembered by every single Hongkonger including me. As Hong Kong has become more and more prosperous, new generations are living in a "concrete jungle" with lots of buildings and technology. The Bauhinia flower is something as famous as the "Lion Rock spirit", it symbolic representation of Hong Kong. It's a flower featured in the regional flag of Hong Kong. My family's migration story originated in Guangdong Provence, including ChaoZhou and XinHui. My great grand parents moved to Hong Kong for reasonsI don't know, but my grandpa on my father side had to escape from the strict Chinese Government and therefore swam to Hong Kong and met my grandma. My parents and I are fully raised in Hong Kong. I used this pattern composition because my whole family mainly resides in Hong Kong and cantonese opera is what impacted my family until me. The reason I made a circle with the accessories of the actresses is because it's just like a circle of life that impacts everyone in my family.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. My dad was raised in England and my mom was raised in Vietnam. My dad lived in Coventry and my mom lived in the central islands in Vietnam. When she was six, she got sick with malaria so they went to Saigon. She was in the hospital for a year. They then went to Nha Trang for holiday. They slept on a train but their stuff got stolen so they were forced to live on the beach. She ended up selling things on the beach for money. That's how she met my dad. So now whenever I go to the beach in Nha Trang like I am right now when I am typing this, I always remember this story.

My scarf shares the story of four generations of my family. Since both sides of my family tree all seems to have started in Mainland China, I included some parts of the country of China on the sides. My father’s mother lived in Hong Kong for the entirety of her life, eventually raising my father in Hong Kong, where we stay to this day. My mother was raised in Hong Kong and has resided here permanently, which is why I added the flag of Hong Kong in the middle of the piece and the city of Hong Kong on the top and bottom. The background of this piece is Lion Rock, which represents the 60s and 70s, where many immigrants from China, including my grandparents came to Hong Kong to reside in, and everyone was not particularly wealthy. “Lion Rock Spirit,” a term first coined in the 1970s, represents how those immigrants would do hard labour to raise the next generation, in turn, building Hong Kong into the global financial centre it is today. That is more or less a summary of my migration story.

My scarf shares the migration story of my family. My migration map is mainly based on China(Guangdong, TaiShan) and Hong Kong. My grandma on my dad’s side was from Guangdong, so I used the symbol of an ancient temple since there is quite a number of them back in the days to represent china. Me and my siblings are all born in Hong Kong and so is my dad, I used the symbol of an Hong Kong’s style milk tea as well as a pineapple bun to represent Hong Kong, as milk teas was a speciality of Hong Kong and pineapple bun was one of my favourite childhood food. My mom was from TaiShan which is part of China, but then migrated to Hong Kong where she met my dad. I used the symbol of buses to represent TaiShan because the buses where she use to live is completely different from Hong Kong and it’s also a frequent used transport since there wasn’t any metro. And this is my family’s migration story!

My scarf shows the migration story of 3 generations of my family. My mother was born in Fujian, China, and my father was born in Hong Kong. My grandmother from my mom's side was also born in Fujian while my grandfather was born in Indonesia, but then moved to Fujian at a very young age. My grandparents from my dad's side both were born in Guangzhou, China. As my relatives were mainly from mainland China, I decided to put more symbols related to it rather than Hong Kong (where I was born and raised).
