A strategy I learned years back, GUTS: Go directly to the problem, understand each others point of view-agree to disagree, talk through the problem-respecting each others ideas, stay involved.

I thought this was a good strategy to keep an open line of communication, each person has input and accountability.

Iris B. A staff member said, "I'd like to be a part of this issue." So a strategy for me was to respond, "okay, Let's place you on the decision-making committee. Whatever is decided, your input actually becomes part of the change we make." The staff member valued knowing she could actually be a voice that made a difference.

Since I am not good at giving praise or celebrating staff, to start with I am going to plan time regularly on my schedule to do it. I know what and how to do it, it's just taking the time to make sure I do it!

I encourage collaborative problem salving with my staff. We have weekly staff meetings and during that time I encourage staff to bring problems so we can discuss them. It helps them all understand what their co worker is facing.

I would like to try that "Better Together Team Problem-Solving Puzzle" with my staff. And then as a team also share ideas about how we may be able to use that strategy in our work consultation and trainings with educators.

One of my goals is manageable workload for staff. With my job we do all the fingerprinting for providers for the whole state. So we process about 10,000 fingerprints a year so this year is our 5 year renewal so will have about 10,000 more fingerprints to do. I have a staff of 6 do all of this. So we are trying to work on systems to make this all work.

We are looking at hiring some temps to help with processing. We are trying to move way from so much paper. We are also training director to do their own fingerprints in house so that it can speed up the process.

Praising a staff member for a valuable contribution or something special could be done during a staff meeting, as well as during our one-on-one meetings.

I want to be better at accepting new ideas from staff that aren't my own. Sometimes as a lead teacher I feel solely responsible for the classroom which isn't that case.

I also want to ensure that workloads are manageable for my staff. We have been down a teacher on maternity leave and it has definitely been noticed that the workload has increased with her out. We have had subs come in during her leave, but it isn't the same as having her with us in the classroom.

I am a learner myself, so it feels natural to me to support staff development and learning. I try to make connections to learning opportunities on a regular basis, especially those that link to their interests and strengths. I also strive to model and teach effective communication.

Re-build our collaborative teaching team:

Face-to-face interaction among team members on a frequent basis
A mutual “we are all in this together” feeling of positive interdependence
A focus on the development of small-group interpersonal skills in trust building, communication, leadership, creative problem solving, decision making, and conflict management
Regular assessments and discussion of the team’s functioning in setting goals for improving relationships and effectively accomplishing tasks
Methods for holding one another accountable for agreed-on responsibilities and commitments

While I truly value my staff and feel like we work really well together, due to the remote nature of our work, I feel like we don't always have the kind of time together to really celebrate with one another and just enjoy being together. I have a goal for us to do more celebrating and collaborating!
