20% - 30% of slaves dided during the middle passage... bad conditions 
- The survivors were sold at slave auctions

Slave codes controlled the slaves population that gave the slave privileges. You can scare the slaves and keep them comfortable in their slavery.
If run away, your family will be harmed

Stono Rebellion - largest slave revolt in colonial history.
The US cut off their heads and put them on sticks after they tried to flee to Spanish Florida 

Society is stratfied
