All our pupils have additional learning needs ranging from moderate learning difficulties, autism and ADHD to social and emotional behavioural difficulties. Each class that has been invited to join in the project so far has been so enthusiastic it has been over whelming. The effort that Year 9 put into learning the lines of the song “This is Me” was incredible. As Sharon knows, there was even a phone ringing in the background when they were recording and they didn’t flinch – they just carried on!!! 

In terms of the weekly challenge, that has brought its own rewards. My form group of Year 10 pupils go out to a neighbouring school for pupils with physical disabilities. They are proud to be the first peer mentoring group that have done this. When we started practicing the “Good morning” and “Good afternoon” Makaton signing, they were so excited and told me that the pupils in the other school sign to them every morning and now they felt able to sign back! 

This is indeed a truly inclusive learning project and one that I feel tremendously proud to be a part of 😊

We've only had one 40 minute lesson to learn the song as their lesson this week was cancelled. After that one lesson the whole class signed parts of This is Me to the whole of KS2 in assembly. Some of the children gave up their lunchtime to record their line - and then stayed to sign the whole song. 

Another class took on the Weekly challenge and all wanted to be in the video. Not only that, they taught their teacher the signs and greeted me with them all week. Children are signing to me when they see me in the corridor, and even greeted me in Makaton at parents' evening on Tuesday which led to some discussions with parents about how much their child(ren) were enjoying learning it.

I've done KS2 assembly twice this week (I don't have my own class so I had everyone so their teacher could get ready for parents' evening) On Tuesday all 270 children signed Good afternoon and also learned how to sign How are you and the two responses. On Thursday they all signed without being reminded. They even reminded me of how to sign teacher! When I played the January song as they left, it took a looong time to clear the hall as they all walked really slowly so they could watch!
I need to get a GoPro mounted to my head though as I have no video evidence of any of this!!

Most children struggle with self-esteem and resilience is at an all time low. My p5/6 class, despite being lovely are a handful! One of my lower level children is selective mute. I have had the pupil for a year and a half now and the progress has been incredible. She is now talking in class much more but pictures and videos are still a huge hurdle. After putting in the work and seeing a connection between their selective mutism as well as children in the school that use makaton to communicate they felt obligated to be part of our first video and have taken on responsibility to make sure we have our line in A Million Dreams perfect!
