The poet's use of imagery reveals that being poor is is painful, desperate and humble.

An example of the poet showing pain is the first line. The simile of ‘The skin cracks like a pod’. This is a painful image which shows how dry and sore their skin is from the harsh and unforgiving lifestyle. The imagery used by Dharker towards the end of the poem contrast with the image of dry referring to the sun as ‘liquid’. This adjective portrays the thirst that the heat brings resulting in a mirage of even the sun being water or something to drink. The mirage image depicts the desperation for water and how valued it is.

Form and Structure - Henry and Simon

Another way in which the writer presents idea about poverty is through the form and structure. For example, the writer describes how the skin “cracks like a pod.” The endstopped line helps create a sense of hopelessness and desperation faced by the poor. The short sentence could represent the limited opportunities encountered by unprivileged people. As the poem progresses, the writer begins to use long sentences when the water pipe erupts. “The municipal pipe bursts/ silver crashes to the ground” helps emphasise how essential it is for the poor. Furthermore, Dharker’s use of enjambment could represent the endless the flow of water and the boundless happiness brought to the poor citizens.

Imiataz Dharker uses imagery to portray the struggles of being poor. The poet shows the difficult lifestyle that impoverished people live. In the first verse of the poem, Dharker describes the people living in these harsh conditions as having “skin cracked like a pod”. This simile helps the reader visualise the misfortune the people have. The use of the verb “cracks” is a verb in the present tense, which leads to the impression round that this is an ongoing issue. This word could also have provide a sense of fragility, and shows they are in a weak state of mind. Cracked skin has connotations with malnutrition, lack of water and lack of hygiene. All of these conditions will contribute to a physical strain that these people will possess, in addition to providing the reader with a sense of empathy for the impoverished.

The poet uses imagery to show th desperation of being poor. The poet writes “silver crashes to the ground” referring to the water being dispensed from the pipe. Referring to the water as silver suggests the people’s desperation in that something we see as common is an overwhelmingly valued substance. The word “silver” has connotations of being a luxury reserved for the rich, which shows the poor people’s attitudes as they see water as a luxury. The poet uses this metaphor to illustrate the poor people’s desperation for water, a substance they see as as
precious as silver.

The poet uses aural imagery to show not only the panic that insues but the undertone of violence in the event. The poet writes “a roar of tongues” to demonstrate to the reader that there is a cacophony when the water arrives, this shows how frantic and out of control the situation is. Furthermore the word “roar” has connotations of violence and wild animals, this displays the ferocious nature of the people when they see the opportunity to obtain some water. Wild nature of the situation furthers the sense of desperation as the people are reduced animals fighting for their survival. A possibility shown when the poet writes “small bones” a possibly sign of dead children who weren’t able to acquire the water.

JONNO ANS DODIE: The poet suggests that being poor often means that blessings look different in less developed countries. The word "blessing" can often be interpreted in many different ways with positive connotations attached to it.This indicates to the reader that the poem is perhaps very positive and it becomes evident that this is the case when we see the blessing of the water bursting out of the pipe and finally providing water for those who are desperate for it. In the poem it describes the burst pipe as a "sudden rush of fortune" which shows they feel it is a blessing. The use of the word "fortune" indicates that they may have prayed for this and have been rewarded. DODIE AND JONNO :) ;)

There is still joy to be found even if you're poor (Max and Meabh)

In the poem ‘Blessing’, Dharker uses imagery to show that joy can be found even in times of poverty. An example of this is ‘naked children screaming in the liquid sun’ The use of the word ‘screaming’ conveys the impression of excitement and intense joy. This effect in improved upon by the phrase ‘liquid sun’ which suggests that the water is bringing them life and warmth just like the sun. Dharker uses this phrase to convey to the readers that joy can be brought about from the simplest of sources even to those in poverty. Another example of this is in the last stanza when it says ‘the Blessing sings over their small bones’. The word ‘sings’ has connotations of happiness and joy which many readers will be able to relate to because singing reminds them of happy memories, perhaps in their own lives.
Also the word ‘blessing’ is also the title of the poem, which places emphasis on the fact that they are being so joyful and that them being happy Is theblessing
