Part 1. The Information. Democratic Party Platform.

The 2016 Democratic Party projected itself as the progressive party. This platform was more progressive than any of the past. This is due in part by the immense support that Bernie Sanders, an outspoken socialist, received. Although they put all of their eggs in the Hilary Clinton basket Bernie received a lot of support from the youth and they realized that people who support the Democratic Party are not as moderate as they once were. The 2016 DNC concluded that the Democratic Party would represent many ideals. They would seek to raise incomes and restore economic security for the middle class as well as fight for economic fairness and against inequality. They would bring Americans together and remove barriers to opportunities, i.e. a wall. They would provide education and ensure the health and safety of Americans. With a more environmentally concise approach they would combat climate change and secure an environmental future. They sought to be a leader for the rest of the world whether it is Africa, the Middle East, or even the rest of the Americas while confronting global threats of Terrorism as well as Cybersecurity. Doing all of this while protecting the values of women, the LGBT community, young peoples, and religious minorities. This is a large pill to swallow as they sought to do a lot of good for a lot of people. While the Democratic Party failed to get a foothold due to a split party they made a statement about what it is that they wanted to do in the future and what they wanted to represent. They choose to do the opposite of the Republican Party and fight for equality rather than hate. In 2016, Democrats meet in Philadelphia with the same basic belief that animated the Continental Congress when they gathered here 240 years ago: Out of many, we are one.

Part 2. The Reaction.

The main thing that stirred me reading this party platform is how they wanted to do so much for the people, all people not just whites, yet they still did not get enough support in order to win the election. If you evaluate it purely for the ideals of the party not just the candidate they backed then it is clear that there is a major difference in morals and ideals between the two parties. While the Republican Party is made up of more conservative people and religious people as well the Democratic Party seeks what is in my opinion for the things that Jesus would have wanted.
Reading this there was many parts that made me feel hopeful and none that made me feel infuriated. I felt hopeful to see that this party wanted to fight against global warming something that will potentially be the end of life as we know it, it is saddening to see that the rival party who won has not only denied the reality of global warming but has rolled back certain policies that can make it worse. Another thing that made me hopeful was that they sought to bring Americans together and remove the barriers to opportunities, I agree whole heartedly that America has become more and more divided as of late. Of course if we want to talk realistically it has been divided from the start of the two party system. This recent election and the back and forth between the two parties has only worsened the situation in the recent years. The part that is infuriating to me is the party that one did so by playing off of the division between peoples that already exist in this country. Whether it is building the wall or the travel ban this presidency has made it clear what kind of "people" they wanted in this country.
My favorite position on this parties platform was their notion of how they would combat climate change. This is my favorite position for many reasons, climate change is one of the biggest threats that faces humans. If we don't stop what we are doing or find how to adjust and change the way that we treat this planet the next great filter that comes to this planet will be self made and not natural like those of the past. It is simply ignorant to deny the thousands of scientist and thousands of hours of research that have gone into the subject. The Republican Party sums it up as propaganda. While I'm all for creating jobs the Trump administration has created the wrong kind of jobs. Coal is a non-renewable energy source not to mention that it is bad for the environment too. If you do not agree with this just look into the town of Centralia, it has essentially been on fire underground since the 60's thanks to coal mining. It is sad to see something that needs to be combated now and instead it is being worsened thanks to ignorance.
When I was younger I did not know hardly anything about the different party platforms. I purely based my opinions of them based on their leaders. But as I have gotten older I have realized that there isn't solely power in the one whom is elected president. Supporting a party for their party ideals and not just for the specific candidate that is headlining the party at the time is how I am now. The Republican Party did not want Trump to be their front runner at the beginning of the election circuit it is extremely clear if you followed it. He used gimmicks and social media and help from out side sources to win the election. But it is support from other parts of the government, the house and the senate that will stop him from running the country in to the ground so to speak.

Part 3. Evaluation.

There were a lot of parts about this Party Platform that I agree with and I feel like a lot of people would but it is easy to see why they failed to get their candidate into the presidency. For one they failed to get a good candidate. While Bernie Sanders garnered a lot of support the majority of people especially those swing states will realistically at this point in time not elect someone who is openly a socialist. But then they turned around and backed Hilary Clinton who retrospectively is obvious a bad candidate to support. Not to mention the whole fiasco with Behngazi she was not the right choice for the candidacy. Bernie garnered the support of young democrats getting, this is purely a guess, at least 80% of the young democrats support. So Hilary could realistically only garner the support of older democrats and that she did but those who are on the fence were still alive during the Clinton administration and won't be so quick to get another one in office. Hilary established herself as a moderate democrat when her husband was in office and its hard to support someone when they change, all be it for the better, so drastically. It makes it seem like she is only saying these things because she thinks it will get her into the office. Forgetting the candidate and talking about the party platform alone while I agree with it they almost bit off too much to chew. Between health care, global warming, and gun control it is almost too much just those topics alone a lot of people would already be against getting the Democratic Party into office without even looking at the candidate that is representing them. Although I agree with a lot of these issues the majority of voters are not me. The majority of voters are older people not the young and these people tend to not even believe in Global Warming and if they do they don't even care because as my grandfather has said to me, "why should care about what happens to the planet because anything bad that happens will be after I'm gone". Which is one of the most disgusting ways to think that I have ever heard and that comes from my own grandfather. Theres parts of it that both sides would tend to agree with, reigning in Wall Street for one. They brought the country almost to complete economic ruin in 2006 and basically went unchecked and got away with it. Whats to stop someone from murdering the world economy out of greed if they are not treated like a murderer. This is something that people on both sides would agree with, I mean obviously not my opinion about treating them like murderers but that wall street needs to be regulated. But the problem is when you restrict too much too fast you are going to receive an immense amount of push back. While everyone would also agree with their notion to guarantee civil rights for everyone, not just whites but, LGBT, Muslim, Middle eastern, Blacks, Hispanics, and woman of all color, but again this was not highlighted as much. They failed to try and step away from the hatred that the Republican Party was brewing and fed into it themselves. Instead of making use of ads about how and what they would do but instead also engage in the back and forth name calling that got Trump elected. The main problem is that they did not see him, Trump, as a threat. And to someone like me who wasn't even able to vote in the 2016 election it was clear to me that he would be a contender. They always say that any publicity is good publicity sadly that proved to be true even with the president. People were refreshed to hear something that a politician would never say come out of the mouth of the front runner for the presidency even if it is vulgar and offensive to many. At a time when the American people were tired of career politicians the Democratic Party picked the someone who's already had a taste of the presidency and whose entire life since Yale has been politics.
