In the opening scene Sophocles introduces Antigone and her sister Ismene. Antigone asks Ismene if she has heard what the Captain-general proclaimed regarding to their brothers. When Ismene says she has not heard, Antigone tells her that the leader of Thebes buried Eteocles but will not bury Polynices. Antigone has the idea to go and bury their brother herself and wants Ismene to help her. But that would be breaking the law and the consequence for burying someone who has been "banished" is to be stoned in the street. Ismene declines to help because she is scared and knows it is against the law. Antigone tells her that even though the law prevents it, the heaven approves it. Antigone feels like what she is doing is right.

Other Sibling rivalries in Literature

Besides Antigone and Ismene, there are other sibling rivalries out there in the literature world. One example of another sibling rivalry is Cain and Abel. These two are brothers in the Bible. Cain killed Abel and was most likely motivated by jealously. Abel's offering was looked upon favorably while Cain's was not. Another example of sibling rivalry is Joseph and Reuben. Joseph was loved more by his father than his other brother was. His brother was jealous but insisted that instead of blood shed, that Joseph should just be banished from the land.
