Discussion Highlights:
- Character development is key. Throughout pg. 66-131, characters such as Rodrigues explored what it means to be a martyr. Although the title seems flattering, being a martyr in Japan is a one way trip to persecution. We discussed what we think will happen in the future of this novel based on this development. 
-Endō effectively uses imagery in this chapter to describe the scenery. It also contains foreshadowing of the difficulties Rodriguez will face on his trip
-We also asked each other if we were in Rodrigues’ shoes, what would we do? Would we gear up enough courage to die for our faith or would we crack and abandon our faith? It showed how some of us were afraid of death and how some of us embraced it.

- We discussed Rodrigue’s apostasy. Most of us believed that he should of stayed true to his faith.
- We talked abut the relationship between Judas and Jesus and how it presents itself in this reading
-We discussed Endo’s use of personification. He compares Japan to a man who needs to choose one wife: Christianity -> “Ugly wife” to Japan
-We also spoke about the allusion to the story of Judas. This is one of the most well known stories and referring to it in the novel allows the reader to better understand the situation that they are in.

-Endos quote on page 36-37 creates an ominous tone by showing how they noticed two people watching them. He further pushes this ominous tone by using vivid imagery. 
- We talked about applying faith from the book into our own lives.
-We also tried putting ourselves into the characters shoes, and asked what would we do in that situation. Most of us would break, and say whatever they wanted us to say to not be tortured.

We spent most of our time exploring how the religious journey of Sebastian related to our own religious ventures. Most of us turned to our roles within our parishes because those examples were the closest we could come to “missionary work”. 
2. The questions everyone brought to the table were quite intriguing to say the least. They were thought provoking and promoted intense dialogue between us. Keep it up boys.
3. Almost everybody had their book. We were a little disappointed, but it is what it is. GET YOUR BOOK. This will allow for maximum ideas to be shared. We are all in this together. Let’s be better. 
4. For the next meeting, we want everybody to try and finish their journals BEFORE class or at least think about them.
