Rocks, Pebbles and Sand feedback 05/04/21 by Vanessa Vales-Lewis

Co-Teach presentations are graded based on the Danielson Rubric Domain 3 Instruction, Competency 3c, and 3d: Engaging Students in Learning and Assessment. Let's offer our colleagues feedback on their presentations for the evening. Feedback should include ways in which improvements can be made for the final unit plan and lesson plan submission.

Wow! what a great presentation Jessica, you explained the lesson very clear and I learned a lot about minerals. You taught us using the regents exams rubric in a very clear way and even had us practice answering some regents exams questions which I think is great preparation for students in the classroom who will be taking the regents exam. I liked the presentation, great job.

Jessica:
This lesson really took me back to 10th grade when I had earth science. Kind of wish I was taught this way especially with how detailed you were explaining how to use the reference table. Let me tell you, you kept me on my toes because if I was not paying attention, you would know. The presentation was great. Also, nice touch with adding regent questions because students can get an idea of what to expect.

Warren:
This lesson is nice for in person and the docs are great to have as handouts. It was so fast pace and was trying so hard to keep up but I don’t think it’s your fault. It’s a time crunch. Maybe this can be separated into 2 days. Would’ve loved playing the time to climb and matching. This just shows how different teaching online and in person is.

Thank you both!

I really enjoy this topic. I love me some Earth Science and I failed miserably in high school, but I really do love this sect of science. I was reminded of some cool aspects of minerals and rocks, how they are formed and their cycle. Sort of blows your mind when you think about it.

One thing I would change about Jessica’s presentation is that the slides went by too quickly for me. She was absolutely amazing in tone and delivery, but I like to take notes...and the slides went too quick for me to take notes. All in all though, a great topic, great lesson.

Warren’s tone was welcoming and nonjudgmental. I was a little confused with the flip flopping between apps. I am also an old lady and have a hard time understanding tech stuff. There was a lot of information and I love this stuff and it’s been a minute, so I wanted to really dive in, but I got a bit confused going between the apps. In class setting, this lesson would have been GREAT!

Really great job to the both of you. I love learning new things!!

I love learning about the Rock cycle and I'm so happy that you presented the content for it. Glow: You included color diagrams, provided explanations, and incorporated a video to guide the lesson and content.

Grow: Remote learning is very challenging, especially with Earth science content. Any time you can scale down the information I think is more helpful than harmful. So maybe one lesson focuses strictly on how to understand the rock cycle diagram in the reference table, then the next lesson is the experiment.

Jessica,
I think you did a really good job with your lesson! Providing the reference table as a resource was helpful with some of the questions asked in the lesson. You included a good amount of visuals such as images of minerals, charts and graphs so that it can be easier for us to follow. As I said during class, for me it was a little confusing when it came to the Moh's Hardness Scale. The first time you presented it, the numbers went 1-10 from top to bottom, but then I saw it going from 10-1 in a question so it confused me a bit. Sometimes if educators present information in different ways, it can be a bit misleading to students which may cause some confusion. But I appreciate that you helped to clear the confusion I was having, which is what great educators do.

Warren,
I think you did a nice job! You had lots of great information. As I said in class, I think it's important to consider what you would want your students to mostly learn or engage with in a one science class period, which typically is around 45 minutes. I like that you had a slide that listed the things that will be discussed or done in the class time. It's a great way for students to know what they can expect in the class time. You also demonstrated the experiment which was great, as some students may not always have any or all of there materials needed for experiments, but you showed a video and demonstrated the experiment which was helpful. I think showing the questions to students before showing the video can be helpful so that they know ahead of time what they need to pay close attention to in the video. I know that can be helpful for some students. I find it helpful to know ahead of time what I should be looking for when working on some kind of task.

Good job, both of you!
Thank you,
Barbara
