"Yet the Cult of the Dead Cow is a skeleton key for the whole saga of modern security, especially the struggle to sort through what is ethical." This quote sets up just how impactful every member of the groups actions effected the future of security. And this quote continues to be true as the book continues. Many things that these members did can still have the effects seen today.

While reading this book I noticed mention of a social hacker named Kevin Mitnick. I have actually read one of Kevin's books titled "The Art of Deception". It was really cool seeing these too stories converge. Kevin book was a more informative piece then "Cult of a Dead Cow" but its really cool too see how small the hacking scene really was and the effect the Cult of a Dead Cow member had on him.

I would interview Kevin Wheeler about his decision to let John Lester cDc *Cult of a Dead Cow*. Why did you not invite John into cDc earlier? Did you even know Johns impressive contributes to hacking before letting him join? Was he so impressive to you that you had to waive the rule or people asking to join? Overall I just want more detail on this interaction.

My book is in the third person limited perspective. This allows the author to tell the stories multiple characters and connections freely. There is lots of characters that may only appear once or twice in the entire story. And third party groups that quickly need to be recognized with internal information. The author chose this perspective because the book is not an autobiography. Its about a group of people and there story.

"hold off publishing details of security flaws until a patch was ready" This practice in disclosing security flaws with the company that produces the product has become common practice. This was the first occurrence of this in the realm of cybersecurity and who else but the Cult of the Dead Cow to be responsible for yet another lasting theme in the tech industry

Without a doubt my book calls for social change. Specify the idea of creating secure technology and preserving internet privacy. One group associated with the Cult of the dead cow called l0pht. They cooperated with the US government to create legislature or securing the internet. As well as publicly shaming Microsoft for there complete ignorance in operating system security. They did this by exploiting systems in the windows operating system and creating famous hacking tools that they would release publicly.

While reading this book I found that many of my personal beliefs where very similar to those of the member of cDc and its subsidiary groups. Things like removing global censorship, advocating privacy rights, and the importance's of cyber security in are modern world. Before reading the book I didn't fully understand just how important the these groups and the internets effect on tyrannical governments. It really makes me appreciate having instant information. The book also shines a light on these groups importance in manipulating cooperation to respect the consumers rights and understand that this power comes with large responsibility.

Despite my high parse for the book I have noticed some things I would like to be handled differently. Some times the author goes on these long drawn out stories about a random person that would turn out to have little to no impact in supporting the theme of the book. I understand the appeal to some people but it makes the novel difficult to follow and feel like it was made for actual members of the groups reminiscing on the past rather then a person that's unfamiliar with the events. Another gripe I have with the book is the author assumption that the reader will already have background knowledge on the tech space. I would not recommend this book to someone that not very interested in technology and hacking looking to understand it more.
