It goes back several hundred years to the time of the Peninsular War, when Napoleon’s troops took over San Sebastian and a large portion of the city was burned to the ground. During this time of occupation, it was typical for the women to fetch water at one of the city’s two fountains. All the while, French troops marched around the city, banging on their drums. No one is quite sure who started it, but soon the women began to beat on the buckets as to mock the French occupiers.

The reason why many of the drummers dress in chef uniforms is because culinary clubs (sociedades gastronómicas) are partly responsible for the event’s success. Other typical dress includes soldier uniforms and women wearing traditional Basque clothing.

Since its creation in 1953 it has established itself as one of the most important cinema festivals in the world.

All of the daily events are followed up by a nightly fireworks competition that lights up the city’s sky. Afterwards, there are loads of concerts and even more partying.
The Semana Grande festival comes to an end with a strange twist of fate, when Marijaia is lovingly set ablaze. They say that her hands are raised into the air as a sign of optimism and to symbolize dancing. But maybe its also because she ends up being set on fire.
