In my library, I am not in a position of authority and cannot change the way the library functions in terms of "neutrality." However, I am in charge of book displays. It's a small thing, but using displays is a good way to bring attention to the fact that your library does support marginalized groups. Use them as a way to support LGBT youth by putting up display specifically geared toward them in Pride month and otherwise. Include holidays outside of the holidays that are so widely celebrated you get a day off work. Promote those Ramadan picture books, the Kwanzaa craft books, and others. Include diversity in all of your displays. A little can go a long way in showing your BIYOC users that you support them and see them.

I'm a degreed youth services professional. That means I get to choose what materials I select for our Story Time, I get to put particular books on display and face-out, I get to support and encourage BIYOC with programming that has no agenda more than "come here and hang out" so that I can listen and learn their names and what they're interested in, and I get to set examples and standards for what are acceptable ways for staff to treat BIYOC when they are in the building and push back against rules that would affect them disproprtionately compared to others in the library.

I can also be a loudmouth at management about things that they would dismiss from someone without The Degree, especially by backing up and boosting my colleagues when they're being loud at management on these issues.

I have power over my decisions and actions. I have the duty to keep challenging, reading, and investigating my own biases and locate helpful materials to refer to my coworkers, family, and friends. I will not expect this to be a light switch - cannot turn racist thoughts off and be done. This is a life long journey. As the person who creates our themed storytime kits, I have the power to choose books that are representative of all people--and make sure that all kits have these kinds of books. This has become easier over the past few years as there have been many beautiful books published that are by and/or about BIPOC and Indigenous people. I am able to include themes that are diverse. I can choose to read diverse books to a group of kids, even if most of them are white. I feel that this helps them understand that while someone may look differently from them, there are many things they have in common.

As an outreach librarian, our team focuses much of our time working with title 1 schools, summer camps that provide free service to kids and sadly to say, there tends to be more biyoc in these groups than in other parts of our county that have more wealth. I can be more deliberate in the programming I take to these groups--especially the summer camps; I feel like I do plan storytimes for the preschools I visit with deliberate intent for the materials I present to be more inclusive and representative, but I have an opportunity to do that for the summer groups as well.

I occasionally help with selecting childrens books for our collection, but even when I'm not, I can send suggestions to our selector.

I research and buy a lot of the toys, etc for our library system and make sure that there is a variety of skin tones in the baby dolls, puppets, doll house figures that are purchased, and that even the play food for the kitchens represent other culture's foods.

Our library system is committed to diversity and we want to reach the people who may need us the most but may feel the most uncomfortable coming into our libraries and I can continue to be a part of that larger goal by applying what I will learn in this class and sharing that information with other staff who may not have the opportunity to take this course.

I can stand up and say something as an ally when a co-worker or patron speaks up about equity or diversity in our library and doesn't receive a supportive or inclusive response. I can speak up when I see something going on that doesn't reflect the library's core values or when a patron or co-worker is subjected to micro-aggressions or racism. I can advocate for diversity in collection development and in the events and activities that are prioritized. I can advocate for community outreach and compassion when patrons who are houseless or neurodiverse are seen as a "problem" when a situation arises. I can advocate for diversity and inclusion in book displays and program themes. I can remind people that representation is a daily commitment and not an annual one-month celebration of a particular identity group.
